How does this setup sound?
400 SBC
327 crank modded for ford rods
ford 300 I6 connecting rods modded to fit SBC crank
custom forged pistons
afr 190 heads with 2.02/1.95 valves
lt4 hot cam
holley stealth ram intake
desktop dyno 2k says this engine with an 850 carb and a single plane will make 525hp@6500 rpms and 469 ftlbs@5000 rpms. hot rod mag did a build up of this engine with a stock lt1 sized comp cam and made 412hp so i think it can make close to these numbers NA with a hot cam. heres the DD screen shot (copy and paste)

and if you want here the Hot Rod article: http://www.airflowresearch.com/artic...le03/A3-P1.htm

Expensive! And a waste of money.
I would not use and reworked parts, when you can get aftermarket component in just about any size you want.

thats a thought i had because i was worried about hacked parts as well. i just didnt know how much custom rods and a forged 327 crank would be. ill look into that.

Why make the engine smaller, bigger engines have more potential for making power.
You can get 6.0", 6.125" and 6.25" SBC rods for pretty cheap from lots of aftermarket companies. Then you could get a used nascar crank and run some custom pistons.
But why? There is no reason to build a small engine unless you are liminted by rules.

If you want something along the LS1 powerband then it will almost just as cheap to go buy a used LS1 and all the goodies to hook it up. There are plenty of articles to the swap.

i was something along the lines of an ls1 style powerband
But even apart from that, what do you really want here? Do you want some arbitrary imaginary spank-off about "power band", or do you want to go fast?
If you've got a 400 block, then build a 400, put the Stealth Ram on it if that's what you want, and be done with it. If you pick the right cam and heads, the power band will follow. All the rest of that custom crank crap is just 3 steps backwards for every step forward; and consists of using your own money as the weapon to shoot yourself in the shorts with.
