Starter whining after startup

I put a new starter in the trans am over the weekend and I can't seem to get it to stop whining after the car starts. It will whine for about 2 seconds after it fires. I assume it is the bendix not retracting like it is supposed to. I tried shimming both sides with 1/64. 1/32, 1/16th, and 1/8th. The whine didn't get any better and when I got ton 1/8th I got a squeel and some grinding since the sprocket was too far away.

I then tried using the 1/16th on the just the outside and it squeeled that way too. Could the new starter be faulty or some other problem I haven't thought of? The starter has a lifetime warantee so i will probably just wait till it fails to replace it if there is nothing else I can do about it.

I'm guessing faulty starter/bendix. It's spring loaded so it retracts after you let the key come back out of the 'start' position. Maybe the spring isn't working, is weak or some other odd problem with it.

Just bring it back and get another. Faulty new starter likely. It happens every now and then.

I've only ever bought one reman. starter. That was for my 85. I usually rebuild starters but that one was so bad, it literally fell apart. There was nothing left to rebuild. That was for a t5. The auto starters seem to be built better.
