When was the first year for electronic speedometers??

When was the first year for electronic speedometers in the Camaro and Firebird? Also, were all the cars that year equipped with electronic ones, or did they change it mid-year? Thanks.

I think he means the electronic input (not with a cable) not the electronic readout. As far as I know it was mid 86 for Birds and don't know when for Maros, prolly a year or so later.

The 84 Camaro Berlinetta was the first F-body to receive the electronic speedo sending unit in the Tranny..... along with a long list of Camaro "firsts"

Thats what I meant, it has an electric servo, but it looks like a regular speedo. The date on the cluster itself is November 12, 1985. Pretty sure all 86 TA's had it. I also know that 85 TA's had the VSS on the tranny, but I think the speedo was cable driven... its been so long since I had that car I cant recall if it had a cable or not but there was a VSS on the trans I had to replace it.

I heard 86 on all firebirds and somewhere around 91 for camaros. My firend's girlfriend's 89 RS has a cable driven speedo, but his 89 Firebird has electric. Don't get this confused with the VSS like madmax said, that is only to tell the ECM how fast you are going. The electric speedo has another sensor and wires going to the speedo instead of a cable. My 83 bird has a cable driven speedo, and the VSS is on the back of teh speedo on the gauge cluster.

Birds got them in 86 only if the car was ordered with the gauges package. If it had the "idiot light" package then it was cable.

Its absolutely positively 100% without a doubt 1990 model year in Camaros. I cant speak for Berlinettas, however.

Firebirds you're on your own. I've heard 85, 86, and 87, but I believe it was 86.
