Engine running SUPER rich (gas in oil)

ok here is the problem..i have a 89 IROC with 350....well the car is running super rich...to the point that it is not burning all the gas and it is coming out of the exhaust....and there is gas going into the damn oil...yes oil...i replaced the oil and there was gas...on the oil....well...needles to say i am stupified so i dont know what to do or check...i replaced the Fuel pressure regulator, the oxygen sensor that is in front of the MAF sensor (sensor that is in the air {Y} thingy doohikie whatever thing is called (where the air comes in...air dam i guess....well that sensor is disconnected and i cant find the sensor connection...well question also is does it even have a sensor there to begin with... well i am lost and need help fast....i took the car to some mechanics and they are stumped...(freakin auto shop mechs suck) but can anyone help...please....freakin pretty please...

Is this the original engine that came with the car or has it been swapped? Also, when did the issue come about or has it been slowly building up the whole time?

gas in the oil usually means there's a leak somewhere in your cylinders. possibly some blow-by in your rings. or possibly a defective fuel pump (if it's mechanical)

He mentioned the O2 sensor and MAF... that suggests TPI to me

I'd check the ignition system first. Check your plugs and wires, see what kind of shape they are in.

Does the engine have a miss? Could be a cylinder(s) not firing.

Whats your fuel pressure set to? Should be around 45psi IIRC. I'm not really familiar with EFI, but I think higher fuel pressure would make it fun richer, correct?

You could also have a shot O2 sensor as well... It plays a VERY important part in the A/F metering, and when they fail, they make the engine richen up IIRC.

Another possibility is if at some point in the past, the engine had some extreme detonation & cracked a piston, that's a pretty good way for this to occur. A compression test would sort that out pretty quickly. In any case, get it taken care of ASAP or you'll spin bearings all over the place.

Leaky injectors. Fix ASAP before your engine is ruined.

had the same problem after my rebuild, but i guess it was due to the rings breaking in. i pulled my injectors out of the manifold and pressurized the fuel system without a drop leaking. it's been broke for other things, so can't really attest to the problem being gone, but hopefully it was the rings... is that even normal anyways?

a defective coolant temp sensor, and intake air temp sensor can really make things rich. not saying thats the case, but if it were open, the computers constanly reads -40 degrees, causing a really rich mixture. have the CTS, and IAT checked. blowby is completly normal, but sounds a little excessive in your case, you should have a compression test or cylinder leak down test done.

well the IAT is good to go...it was disconnected but now connected and working good.....and i just found out that the MAF sensor is bad and at $300+ dollars i am really freakin out.... so does anyone have a spare MAF sensor that i can buy for a 89 IROC..... this really sucks...this car is really gonna cost me to fix up...but at $1100 what did i expect.....but its all good....makes for a good project car.....anyways....i will have the Coolant Temp sensor checked as well....plus the injectors as soon as i have the MAF replaced....hopefully soon...and i wasted 3 days looking for the IAT in from of the MAF....i forgot i replaced the air induction cowl (dont know the proper name) with a 6 cyl one and totally forgot that thats not where the IROC has it but near the freakin plenum .....but i found it nonetheless ....well thanks for you guys help...i will keep you guys informed and ask for help as i make progress.....thank *** for TGO....

You could by a maf here in the for sale fourm. Anywhere from $30-75 anytime. Should have come here first and learned about your car instead of a "parts swapper" tinkering with it. Hope you asked for all your old parts back.

well i am picking up the car tomorrow and will pay $120 for an oil change, filter, and for telling me where the air sensor is and that the MAF is bad.....but this mistake i will not make again....from monday on i will be here asking a ton of questions and learning about my car the right way....thanx so far for everything guys and as far as the MAF...i will be getting it soon within the next few days....as well as a new IAC valve...figured i might as well change that too while i am at it.
