Cam question

I originally posted this in the TPI forum but haven't had a response yet so I thought I would try it here. I am looking to upgrade the cam in the 305 tpi engine I am building. The engine is a .60 over 305 (14010201 casting) with stock heads (14014416 casting 1.84"/1.5" valves, 58cc chambers). I will be running a 700r4 trans and 2.77 stock gears. The TPI setup is a stock 86 IROC setup. I may put a better prom in it soon also. I am looking for a street car that will perform better than stock at the track. What would you TPI gurus recommend, other than chunking the 305 and building a 350 . Thanks in advance for your help.

Stock stall, highway gears, stock TPI - XE256.

(Get new valve springs. . .)

Thanks for the reply. Not sure if it matters but the xe256 shows to be for stock TPI cars, mine is overbored. Would that present an issue? Also, the trans has not been built yet so the stall could be changed. I was kinda leaning towards the xe262h but havent committed yet. Thanks again for your time.

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Overbored = stock, as far as the cam is concerned. There is no difference. Overbore is just maintenance, not some radical re-definition of the motor.

I agree with five7; I'd go with the lesser cam; especially with those pitiful gears.

In a 305, the XE256 will have a powerband similar to what the 262 would have in a 350.

Even with the XE256, higher stall, like 2500, would be beneficial. Just don't go overboard, or the TPI will become your limiting factor in a hurry.
