Starter Bolt Patterns...
I ahve engine block casting number,
3970014....350...70-76...2 or 4
The guys that did a good amount of the building on my engine says i almost cannot run a t-5, simply because of my starter bolt pattern.
I have the staggered bolts, angle sorta, simply because the car came with the large flywheel, i ran a large flywheel starter...
I could have sworn i have the other straight across bolt also, for a small flywheel.
am i wrong?
i think this guy just is trying to be lazy, and not do what i want...
Didn't angle bolt blocks also have straight across bolts as well?

I know that you can buy starters that have both bolt paterns drilled into them for older blocks or newer ones and that they will acept 153 or 168 tooth flywheels. check out Summit. Also, i agree he's lazy

Ok, here's the skinny: (do a search under sofakingdoms name, he posts on this subject every few days, and is probably running out of breath on it )
3rd gens, using 3rd gen transmissions, can't use the large 14" / 168 tooth flywheel / staggered bolt pattern setup. Those 3 things go together. Reason is that you can't get the large flywheel inside the bellhousing, and you can't use a bigger bellhousing in the small trans tunnel.
SO! What you have to do is use the smaller flywheel that fits. 12.4"/153 tooth. Now that means you need a straight tooth starter.
**There is no way around this**
So, if buddy still has your motor in his machine shop, tell him to drill the block for the straight pattern starter. He'll do it with a magnetic base drill, etc, and do a fine job of it. Probably cost you $40+ though. Cheaper than the alternative (there is no alternative, sorry, just getting your hopes up).
I had my motor completely assembled, when I found out this little tidbit. My machinist wouldn't do it, unless I tore the motor down so he could set it up. So I did it myself with some alignment fixturing stuff, and a VERY STEADY HAND and some courage.
Do a search on my name if you want some pictures of how I did it, if you want.
Good luck
