Re: what valve springs do i need
I'm assuming this is a hydraulic flat tappet...
Comp 924, set up at 1.850" would work well

If you don't have the tool to measure installed spring height, yeah have a shop do it. Or buy the tool and do it yourself, since you'll likely use it again in the future.

Ah, big block, that would explain it.
When you go to break in that cam please remember to use a can of GM EOS in the oil. Modern (street/EPA-approved) oils don't have the good stuff in them any more that a flat tappet cam needs. The 1.8 rockers only make things harder on the cam and lifters vs. stock ratio 1.7s. You don't want to risk wiping the cam.
Using "racing" (non-highway approved) oils is another alternative- they do and always did have the "good stuff" in them for flat tappet cams. But typically they're only available in 20W50 weight.
I am screwing together a 454 right now with a similar Comp 282S flat tappet solid cam and I stayed with stock ratio (1.7) rockers for various reasons including it being easier on the cam and lifters for a street driver. Mine will definitely have a can of GM EOS in the oil before I turn the key the first time.

Re: what valve springs do i need
is the only reason they took that stuff out of the oil is because the changed over to roller everything or is there another reason

Re: what valve springs do i need
zinc kills catalytics. Since cats have to be warrantied for 100k miles, and it isn't necessary in high concentrations w/ roller motors, it is being phased out. I just installed and test drove a Comp 0.503/0.510" hyd roller, and I just used assembly lube on it, regular Castrol GTX 10w40 conventional oil, fired the motor, and off I went. A roller doesn't need to be broken in like the flat tappet stuff, just plug and play and go.

I'm using AMSOIL Series 3000 5W-30 synthetic heavy duty diesel oil in my 396. Has the antiwear additives, and is gasoline rated.
FWIW, AMSOIL says any of their gasoline rated oils are fine for flat tappets, even the GF-4 with the reduced zinc & phosphorus. But, I'm taking the extra step and using the diesel oil, anyway. It also has a higher total base number for extra corrosion protection - nice for engines that see intermittent use and long storage.
