code 44, surging idle
I have an 85 TA 305 LG4, and I am getting a code 44.
The car warms up fine - fast idles at 1800, then drops to 700, and will stay that way for several minutes. Then, the SES light comes on and the idle starts surging between 1500-2000rpm. I checked for codes, and I got a 44 (o2 sensor lean)
I replaced my O2 sensor, and I can't seem to find a vacuum leak, but still get a code 44 and the surging idle. Not to mention fuel economy has been pretty bad. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Re: code 44, surging idle
What is the setup? What changes/modifications have you done? Does the surge happen only under certain conditions? What engine temp does it start doing this at? last tune up?

Re: code 44, surging idle
-installed rebuilt e4me carb last summer
-last tune up was last summer too
-new plugs, wires, dist cap & rotor, filters
-new o2 sensor, pcv valve
The problem happens every time i start the car. The idle stays at 1500-2000rpm after the ses light goes on (which stays lit for a minute then goes off). Not sure what temp it starts at, I can find out though.

Re: code 44, surging idle
sounds like an EGR problem...a tiny piece of carbon could get stuck in it and it would be slightly open..causing a lean condition. You need to remove it and clean it up...but first run the engine and hold it at 2000-3000rpm and use a squirt bottle to spray water into the manifold. The water vaporizes and will help to cleanout the carbon in the cylinders, most will go out the exhaust..but some will end up in the EGR valve.

RodsRide, I replaced my EGR valve recently, and ran Seafoam through the engine, but I will try cleaning out that manifold. Which other EGR components should I check? Thanks

Re: code 44, surging idle
Have you found a definition for what Code 44 is yet?
