EGR Solenoid Discontinued???

I was going to replace the EGR solenoid. Called two dealers and they said it is discontinued for the 5.0 and 5.7. What now??? Not exactly a part I would want to go to the junk yard for. Anybody heard this? Can the old one be rebuilt? What is everyone else doing?

Re: EGR Solenoid Discontinued???

I found the solenoid for a 91 on the following site (probably available at your local parts stores as well--I believe I purchased mine at CarQuest):

Re: EGR Solenoid Discontinued???

did u ask the dealers to search all related dealerships?

also did u go to both ponitac and chevy?

i had trouble finding one a year ago. i think i bought one of the last not last last but last of a few.

the part i bought was shipping in from illinois i think it was sitting on a shelf for like 10yrs

dont go to advance auto parts or auto zone.

you gotta try to find other auto stores like the smaller kind that are only in your home town that deal with all aspects.

thats where i found mine and they made some calls and got me one.

it sucks but good luck.

worst case senario you can buy a couple from junk yards and stock up and they should last you.

Re: EGR Solenoid Discontinued???

All it is, is a solenoid that works a vacuum valve. Not rocket science, or "specific" somehow to a particular car. There's dozens, maybe hundreds, of GM vehicles that have a similar part. So even if GM has discontinued THAT PARTICULAR ONE, they're still going to be WIDELY available in the aftermarket for years and years to come. At worst, you might find that a vacuum nipple is for a different size line, or a mounting screw is different, or something like that. Or, that the one you get might be exactly the same, from the same mfr even, just in some other brand of box. Not exactly a Chicken Little "the sky is falling" scenario in any case.

Re: EGR Solenoid Discontinued???

Since the EGR solenoid is not availiable anywhere in the world for my 91 5.7l TPI, I was told to look into a 93-97 LT1 EGR solenoid. The LT1 solenoid is supposed to have the same wire connection as the 3d gen connection and it should work the same. The only apparent difference is supposed to be the bracket which should be easily modifiable. Can anyone confirm about the connection and will it work?

thanks.

You might also try NAPA. They list a part number CRB 22291 on their web site.

Re: EGR Solenoid Discontinued???

1fastam - thanks a ton!, schucks is the same as parts america, I had called them last week, they said not avaliable and no availiable date. After reading your post I called again and they showed 1 unit in stock of the GP Sorensen Egr Vacuum Solenoid Valve part # 7799618. They physically checked stock on the item for me and it's on it's way to me. Thanks again!
