Clicking sound, and rocker question

Hey, I want to make sure this is a rocker sound. the two links are to the two waves I made of the sound with my DVR so they are not the best quality but you can really hear the sound. this is taken with the valve cover off and the DVR recording over the rockers thats why they sound so loud. the sound is coming from the passenger side only and seems to be on top of the engine and not deep in the engine somewhere.
http://www.angelfire.com/bug2/chriso...nesoundwav.wav with out reving it at all.
http://www.angelfire.com/bug2/chrisola/A0000038.wav with a little reving. but not much

I want to try to adjust my rockers with the engine running. I don't know if I need the disconnect the IAC or adjust them with the enigne running at X amount of RPM and do I adjust them when the engine is hot?
I know I back off the nut till I hear the rocker start to click than tighten it till it goes away and do a 1/2 a turn.
tell me if I'm wrong.

Re: Clicking sound, and rocker question

I just found these around a valve spring... Remember this is a new engine and I don't remember putting anything plastic in it
Also after letting it run for a while I see water dripping out of the exhaust and the AC is not on, the AC doesn't even work in my car. and when i turn off the car steam comes out of the tail pipe. I don't see any water on the dip stick but I'm thinking about draining the oil out of the engine to see if i can see water floating around.
Please help!! what should I do?

Re: Clicking sound, and rocker question

exhaust manifold gasket leak makes clicking sounds like rockers and such, very commonly

you sure those pieces arent thin steel ?

is yours a roller cam engine?

might those pieces be sheared from a guide plate ?

upper valve train trouble will not cause water in the oil, etc.,

steam and moisture is going to come out of the exhaust if it is cold out

normal
rockers are actually supposed to be adjuted with the engine stoppped, and warm

zero lash plus one full turn clockwise/tighter if it is hydraulic camshaft

only when the lifter is down all the way on the base/backside of the lobe

this centers the plunger of the lifter in its travel range inside the lifter

good luck

Re: Clicking sound, and rocker question

As far as water in the exhaust it is just condensate, the plastic looks like a breather broke. when you adjust rockers as the intake is just starts to close adjust the exhaust and when the exhaust Starts to open adjust the intake if it is stock go ¾ turn if you plan on spending some time 5000+rpm go ½ and look at the push rod if it don’t move like the rest the lifter or cam is bad

I hade a bad cam once on my 327 it sucked! Have fun

Re: Clicking sound, and rocker question

the cam is hydraulic roller. the pieces are thin plastic, and I was thinking about the water in oil thing last night and came to the same conclusion, that it cant be a leak. I have been adjusting my rockers like 2kickassbirds says to do but I did 1/2 a turn and they are still noisy last time I did it this sound started happening.

By the way 2kickassbirds this is Chris, Cambridge205 is my new user name it just wouldn't make sense havening 92maroonbird for an 89 white car with a red front. Anyways I just want to get this dang thing running I have been on this engine rebuild way too long.

Re: Clicking sound, and rocker question

Is it one rocker or all rockers?
Do all your push rods move the same ?
What kind of rockers are you using?
Did you check if the rocker was on the ball or if the ball was upside down
Are your valves new?
Did you get a valve job if so did you check if the valve was seated properly?
What are the specs on the cam? you could be hearing the valve close

Ha man how is it going you have been on this thing for over 6 months at least you got it running
Did you check out the LTGUN if not go to my car domain

Re: Clicking sound, and rocker question

I put the ratchet on the rocker nuts and put my ear to all of them while the car is running on that side and I heard no difference between any of them.
The heads are new to me the ones that used to be on that car had real bad cracks so I got used ones and had them rebuilt. still L98's and I gave the machinist the cam spec's and he got springs and retainers for the heads to work with the cam.
I know I put the rocker ***** in right. But I still checked and they are all in right.
I don't know how to see if the valves are seated right you would have to tell me how to do that.
The cam is a ZZ4 cam I heard works real nice on l98's specs are, cam lift: .474"/.510" Dur:208/221
Also I had someone cranking the engine to see if the rockers all moved up and down about the same amount and they seemed to do it. But when I was turning the engine over by hand when I was adjusting the rockers some of the rockers looked like they didn't fully open or they would get 1/2 the way open but start to close. I don't know if thats normal for new lifters.

I'm going to adjust the rockers for a 3rd time on that side again sense this sound started to happen after the 2ed time I adjusted them. and see if it helps any.

Nice I knew you wouldn't give up on that car, Nice engine! I wish mine looked as good as that but it never will. but the interior looks nicely parted out are you going to do something about that? Do you plan on making it street legal again I don't think you can, can you?
Hopefully this will be the last problem for my car and I can start to enjoy it again. Than move on to my steering problems Maybe in the far future like a year or so after a paint job I might convert it to HSR till I have to get it emissions tested than its back to TPI

Re: Clicking sound, and rocker question

If you have set the rocker that many times move on start looking for exhaust and A.I.R leaks you would be surprised at how they can sound the same. if you have a compression tester you can look at each cylinder and see if there are any different. you can also check your work on the bottom end and if the valves are seated properly a good reading is about 160 or 180+ for a fresh motor. hope you find it

I can make it street legal and I plan on it I jest got it started lasted night but I still have some work before it goes anywhere

Do you plane on racing it you probably got a 14.5 in it?

Re: Clicking sound, and rocker question

I think I found what it was, the check valve on the header was just finger tight so I tightened that and put the hoses on it, started it and the sound was gone. At least it was at that time… I'm an idiot I should have found that oh well hope I didn’t do anything as stupid as that on the engine rebuild.

However I didn’t even think of compression testing it. I think I'll do that after I break it in and see how I did on the rebuild.

Nice work on that car. What do you think it will run? Oh yeah do you still have Iren?

Yeah I plan on racing it! I'm hoping to get my car running high 13s some day and still legal. You might see me going down Old Spanish breaking in my engine. Anyways thanks for your help. Keep in touch.
