water pump length

so im winding down my 350 build/swap and wanted to order my pulleys, but Im not sure if I have the long or short SBC water pump. when I got the new pump I just asked the parts guy for a pump that would fit a 5.7 thrid gen. what are the measurements (long vs. short) so I know what pulley set to order. also, I want a chrome alternator for my setup, but a co-worker claims they arent good for street cars due to durability issues-I call B.S., but whats the deal? thanks guys

If this is the stock serpentine set-up, you don't want "long" or "short", you want a reverse rotation pump. You need to be more specific and at least say '88-'92 in order to get the right part.

If you aren't using the serpentine system, you want a long standard rotation pump.

Re: water pump length

FYI, short is only used on older corvettes, and some trucks. Everything else is the long nose. So when a parts guy asks you, it's a bit of a dumb question, 'cuz he'll have 5 or 6 long nose behind him, and one short nose, covered in dust....

Short was used on everything until the late 60's. Long came about when more and more belt-driven accessories were being added.

Re: water pump length

in reply to five7kid, how do I know he didn't give me a reverse rotation pump-sorry, I'm an amateur and I didn't know at the time that these things were issues, I just figured a 5.7 pump was the same across the board. I don't know how the serpentine setup being reverse didn't register, but what can I say, I have a short attention span.
