What is this noise, with video.

What is this noise that my engine is making. 500 milies on 383 stroker. This just started making this noise. The noise goes away when the engine revs, but comes back at idle. Any ideas would be greatly appriciated. Thanks.

Collapsed lifter maybe? Try readjusting the rockers while it's running to see if the noise goes away.

Have you checked to make sure you have ample clearance for your set up? Check out like the coil bind max lift limits especially if your running 1.6's. What cam are you running?

Re: What is this noise, with video.

I am running a Comp cam 242. Brand new with new lifters. Would a collapsed lifter make this noise. I have been looking around and it sounds like a spun bearing. But i went around to all the spark individually and could not get the noise to go away. It does not make the noise with all the spark plug wires off and with the engine spining freely. I am not sure on how to check the bind max lift limits. If you could give me some guidance on that i would appriciate it. Also the only thing that i did not change on this engine is the timing chain. Does this sound like a stretched chain hitting the cover? It was a little loose but i did not think that it was to big of a deal.

Re: What is this noise, with video.

It may be a spun rod bearing. I listened on youtube for other videos with engines that had spun bearings and it's sounds awfully close. Are you using a roller cam or flat tappet?

Re: What is this noise, with video.

Flat tappet. Im going to trouble shoot the car as much as possiable tonight. If no luck i will start and tare down the motor looking for the problem. Hopefully not a spun bearing, i really dont want to pay for another kit. I dont know why i have such bad luck. Only 500 easy miles on the engine and then this. I wish i would have just beat the crap out of it. Probly would have had the same outcome.

What's with all the smoke? Is it oil being thrown onto the headers?

Re: What is this noise, with video.

Back in 1990 when I was Germany I had 1983 Z28 that made the same exact noise and when I tore the engine apart I found that 2 cam lobes were worn down completely. The noise was the lifter smacking the worn cam lobe. I would start by turning the motor over by hand and watch the rocker arms.

Re: What is this noise, with video.

Ok well lastnight i started to tear into the motor. I was headed straight for the timing chain and sure enough it was loose and there was some sign of it hitting the cover. I also discovered by reaching my hand into the oil pan that i could move all of the connecting rods side to side just a little. Is this suppose to be able to happen or did i spin a bearing. Its not much, and its not up and down, its moving it from front to back. If its bad why would i be able to do it to all of the, and why would they go out so fast. Please help me! Thanks.

They are supposed to move very little front to back but as long as they don't move up and down on the crank you should be ok. Are you using floating wrist pins or pressed in? Does your oil pressure look ok? Too much rod side clearance will bleed off oil pressure and judging by the oil smoke in the video I'd say your oil pressure is ok.

Re: What is this noise, with video.

Yes they are floating wrist pins. Another thing, if i had spun a bearing wouldnt there be large amounts of metal in the oil. I only had small amounts, normal for new engine break in i would think. I really hope that its the timing chain. Yes I have good oil pressure. And the car acts normal. When i looked at the timing chain it was loose enough to hit the cover, and i think that it jumped a link because the dots dont match up anymore.

Ok i got some video of the timing chain. Do you think that this could have caused the noise from the first video? Any opion would be great thanks.
