Rusty Cams

Hi,

Is there any way to clean up a camshaft that's been exposed to the elements and has surface rust without damaging it?

Thanks,

TJ

But if it's pitted, it's done.

Re: Rusty Cams

Is it a roller? If its a roller, and the surface rusting is light, then you could probably get away with cleaning it up with some light oil + fine grit sand paper (> 600 grit). If its a flat tappet, then forget it.

Re: Rusty Cams

If it's a roller and it's pitted forget it too...the pitting will imprint in the roller and it'll be gone in no time.

They're probably not worth the time then...time for the trash.

Thanks for the responses.

Re: Rusty Cams

If it is a large "Solid Roller" then you could have it reground. They were used race cams with high .700 lift. We sent a few off and had them reground to use in some drag motors. It cost about $175, but the cores were cheap.
