Following tightening instructions?

How important is it to follow tightening instructions for...say..a timing chain cover? They tell me the ft. lbs. to tighten the bolts to, but is it completely necessary to get it exact?

I remember a teacher of mine in a general tech class told me that too tight might warp something and too loose will..well..be loose.

Thanks for any replies.

Re: Following tightening instructions?

On a timing chain cover I wouldn't worry, unless it's leaking oil. On heads or intake, it's IMPORTANT to follow torque and tightening sequence for the warp issue.
