removing smog equip from 305, few questions!

i decided tonight to just remove all the factory smog crap from my 85' 305ci Z28.....(after fighting a fuel pump replacement recently, only to find out the new pump was a leaker)

questions:
i have removed the pump and brackets, i had to unplug a couple of elec connectors......
*will this cause "check engine" probs? (if so, what can i do to avoid?)
*also, a couple of vac lines coming off of thermostat housing fitting, what about them?
*there was a big hose, going to right rear of engine, can i just plug that?
*there were a couple of vac lines coming from carb, can i just plug them?
*what should i do with the tubes coming off of the exhaust manifolds? can i just plug the big check valve/diverter hole?
*what all do i need to be concerned with to avoid probs????

just want to eliminate the smog system, and avoid future probs, any input would be appreciated! thanks, Rick

Cool your jets. In ONE DAY, you get mad that you get no responses?

While it does appear that Kansas does not do emissions testing (correct?), there is a difference between HAVING the stuff & being tested. It is still required by FEDERAL LAW that a vehicle that was originally equipped with emissions equipment keep the emissions parts.

Go ahead....Take the stuff off, gain .5 hp, and possibly get a Emissions Tampering fine of several hundred dollars & have your car no longer allowed on the road, until such time as you replace everything (and pay the fine).

It depends on wether your state smog tests if they do does that include an underhood inspection or just a sniff test if the answer is no than get rid of every thing except the cat because that's federal law and any state trooper can look under there and if you don't have one then they'll get you on that but as far as passing smog I have passed before with just a cat and an adjusted carb on a 75 land yacht no e.g.r no a.i.r nothing

Even if the inspectors do not look under a hook, the smog pump, A.I.R. tubes etc., are all part of the emissions systems & cannot be legally removed.

As for an officer looking under the car for a cat? He can look under the hood too & see if the other stuff is there or missing. The cat is simply the most obvious piece.

I'm just going by my states standards here they look under the car for a cat if it's there they don't bother looking under the hood as long as you pass what they don't know won't hurt them if it was up to me we wouldn't have smog testing to begin with it's all L.a and california's fault in my opinion

See, I've always been curious about the technicalities of this law. Like if I get headers without air tubes, but keep the air injection on the cat, would that be legal? I'm particularly curious about this because I want to get into custom tuning of my ECU and I think air injection at the exhaust ports will muck up the O2 sensor readings and make it difficult to use closed loop feedback at highway cruising speeds.

Now people, the guy wasn't asking to be crucified, he wanted to know what all he could remove and still run alright.

Truth be told you can yank everything and still function fine, just be sure to plug holes where necessary. If you're getting rid of your AIR spiders, why not just get a pair of good shorties while you're at it and make a worthwhile performance gain?

The EGR makes your engine run cooler, which is a benefit. You may want to consider this before you get in there and start yanking bits and pieces out. If your carb is computer controlled, there may need to be some changes made to it's ECU.

Re: removing smog equip from 305, few questions!

thanks guys! (at least i managed to get a little discussion going)
i removed all of the smog pump and related hardware.......plugged off any open lines. the car runs fine, and no engine codes flashing.

kansas does not currently do any testing on emissions, so i should have no problem at all. i intend to keep all of the smog stuff in a box in case this changes at some point in the future.

my main reason for pulling this stuff was so i could get to the mechanical fuel pump. i changed it once with the smog stuff in the way, and it was a B##CH! after pulling the A.I.R., the fuel pump was a breeze to change, so i feel like it was well worth it.

sorry if my impatience ruffled any feathers.......Rick
