Distributor gear change?

I just purchased a new cam for my 383 build. It is an XFI roller cam. Is it necessary to change out the factory distributor gear on my older HEI distributor (internal coil) or will it be alright?

Re: Distributor gear change?

It's a good idea since then you'd have two new mating surfaces.

Moly-Lube both gears wiith an old tooth brush and make sure the teeth are lubed deeply.

Re: Distributor gear change?

Would I have to change material of the gear such as going to a bronze gear, or would the stock one be fine?

Re: Distributor gear change?

How would I know if it requires a change? All that I know is that the distributor is from a engine that didn't originally have a roller cam.

Re: Distributor gear change?

If the distributor came off an engine that used a flat tappet cam, you'll need to change it when using it in conjunction with a roller cam. Call Comp cams and see which one they recommend.

Re: Distributor gear change?

I dont want to hijack the thread but I just got a new cam as well and it recommends a new carbon poly composite gear. Anybody every try one of these?
