1991 TBI pass. side head sensor

Sorry, working my phone & in a hurry, no time for a search.

What is the sensor on the passenger side head? My stupid Chilton's book is NO help at all. The wire going to it is blue and the connector is the same as the knock sensor. I'm in the middle of an engine swap and the old one self destructed instead of unscrewing.

And side rant: why the hell did GM feel it would be a good idea to make 5/16 female square hole pipe plugs? WTF is up with that sheet.

Any quick responses will greatly appreciated.

If your new motor has that plug in that spot and you can't get it out, leave it - in my opinion you'd be better off anyway. The fan switches suck - I never had one that worked longer than 2 months. Just get an aftermarket adjustable fan controller - they come with radiator probes, and they work much much better. And best of all, if it ever does fail, there's no dumping all the coolant into your face to replace it.

In a TBI car, the fan switch being removed won't make any difference to the ECM as it gets it's temp readings elsewhere, and the fan is not ECM controlled like TPI cars so an aftermarket controller is a good alternative. They can be simple and cheap ($30), or have lots of options and adjustability ($80) - mine is a Flex-a-lite about $80 has provisions for A/C, dual fans, fully sdj temp settings, and manual on/off switches.

Re: 1991 TBI pass. side head sensor

Thanks Thomas!

& no, that square plug is actually in the driver's side head where the temp gauge sensor is supposed to be. I found a broken off Craftsmen screwdriver that I think was within .050" of the plug, I need to grind it off straight though & try it. Also I sprayed it with penetrating lube, don't know if that will be too effective on sealed pipe threads though. If that doesn't work... Guess it'll be drill & try an easy out or drill & tap however necessary.
