Starter Bolt length

I got a used starter for my 87 305 auto Transam, its physically smaller than the original. The gear, nose, bolt pattern are the same. When I went to put it in the bolts are too long because the bolt pad is thinner. My questions are: Could it be a manual trans starter? are they different? Can I just put washers on the bolts, or do I need different bolts if so what size.

Re: Starter Bolt length

Starter bolts are special; there's more to them than just the length.

Go visit any parts store, even AutoZone has them hanging on a card in the Help! section.

Re: Starter Bolt length

No, they're special in a different way. I don't have the "special" little section right behind my threads that forms a "dowel pin" arrangement between the starter and the block, so that the starter can't move around, like STARTER BOLTS have.

You have to buy STARTER BOLT SIZE.

They are not normal bolts, that you just buy by size; they are STARTER BOLTS. Doesn't matter what length some other bolts are, if they're not STARTER BOLTS.
