Help: S-D TPI barely starts, runs poorly, stalls as soon as I touch throttle
Car is a '90 GTA. Speed-Density TPI 305 w/5 speed.
When it starts (which is a roll of the dice) it runs as though it is only firing on half the cylinders. As soon as I touch the throttle it stalls.
Fuel pressure is at 42 psi. Doesn't seem to waver at all.
I have spark. Noid light says injectors are firing.
Distributor has given me grief in the past, so I dropped in a fresh one. No change.
Injectors have been serviced twice in the last decade or so. Last time was not that many miles ago. Probably less than 5K miles ago.
The car has been giving me grief for the last few months in that I can drive somewhere--get a couple of miles--and then it dies on me. Last time I drove it it ran great. Next day it wouldn't even start. Hasn't been willing to start for weeks now. At least it isn't stranding me anywhere now.
I'm out of ideas. ECM? Any way to test on that front before I start throwing money away?
Suggestions?
Edit to add: I just found that it will also stall if it has decent voltage. This makes no sense. I was letting it run, poorly as it runs, and watched as the volts on the guage dropped down to about 8 volts and the car stalled. I put on a battery charger at 35 amps and found that the car would only crank, not start. Disconnected the charger and the car started again, but still running very poorly. Flipped the charger back on and the engine immediately died. Does that ring any bells for anyone? I've got no clue on my end.

You mentioned that the injectors were serviced, have they ever been replaced?
If not, just replace them. The stock Multec injector coils short out and give the exact symptoms you describe. I replaced the ones in my car several years ago. Mileage was poor, engine would cut out, stumble, and just run poorly.
South Bay Injectors is a TGO sponsor and can provide a set of Bosch III replacement injectors for a decent price.
There are other injector suppliers that can also provide a set of Bosch IIIs. Just be sure to get a set that fits the TPI base.

It is very common for injectors to go bad on these cars.

Yep. It's an injector problem.
With it just barely running I sprayed starting fluid in the butterflies and it would briefly act like normal. That told me that is was indeed not getting fuel properly.
I then ohmed the injectors and found that number one was at 5.5 ohms. All the rest are between 16.3-16.5.
If I leave the plug off of injector #1 the car runs. Not great, but well enough to drive it around the block. It certainly is better than dying every time you touch the throttle.
For the time being I am going to just replace the one. Being in the #1 position I am hoping I can get away without having to pull the entire fuel rail, and thereby get away with only having to remove the plenum, but not the runners. We'll see.
A new set of injectors would be nice, but the cashflow isn't there. Being a general contractor in SoCal isn't exactly lucrative lately.
