what is the.best cam to use on my engine application
Hey guys i recently discovered the car i just bought had the wrong sized cam for the heads its a lunati.voodoo cam 60105 with 525/546 lift and the heads are only rated to 430 lift so the question is is there a way to get the heads to handle this cam with no machine work an at a fairly decent price or will i have to get s new cam an lifter kit i still want to have a nice noticeable thump an a nice had pull at the low an high end. An still be streetable threw the city...here is the set up from what i know about the engine its a fresh engine with domed pistons (only way i know this is by putting something in the spark plug hole an feeling a slope) lunati cam 60105. Gear drive timing set up vortec heads (valves look new not sure on specs) gm performance mid rise intake edelbrock carburetor believe to be a 750 i appreciate any help. Thanks[/LIST]

Try www.camquest.com. that's comp cams selection tool.
Depending on the heads maybe someone used different springs on them.

XE268 & 274 are well known to be a good match to those heads.
Lose the gear drive; does nothing but cause trouble while accomplishing nothing. Use a good quality REAL roller chain, not the cheeeeeeepest thing that says "roller" in the ad copy or that looks like a "roller"; those are REALLY bushings.
Spend the money you would have wasted on the gear drive, on a good set of 1.5 stainless steel (NOT aluminum) roller rockers.
Since there are virtually NO pistons with domes that will fit in the chambers in those heads, I'd suggest reserving judgment on that, until you have the heads off getting their necessary repair and prep work done. Find out FOR SURE what you've REALLY got before buying ANYTHING.

If the motor is running already the heads were probably set up for higher lift, otherwise it would make a lot of noise when running among other problems. If its not you can use this spring kit http://www.alexsparts.com/valve-spri...rf-hyd-roller/
A lot of people here have used it with no problems.
Also like sofa said, ditch the gear drive.
That is a pretty big cam for vortec heads. How does it run?

I did a compression test an cranking the engine 4 revolution shot to 150 the gear drive was already there i believe it said pete jackson on it whats the big problem with them an i do belive the heads, are just stock because at max lift the coil springs have a hard time getting a .25 feeler gauge from what i understand thats considered coil bind i also noticed cylinder 5 has a broken spring i was gonna go with the alex parts but could not find hardly any reviews any body have them on there vortecs i just worry about buying from a private party site

150 cranking pressure is not huge, little below average if anything. That cam has high lift but not huge duration iirc - are you the guy with all the bent pushrods from the other thread?

I agree, a little punctuation would make that easier to read.
Were it me, I'd take the heads off and find out if I have domed pistons or not. Then, to be safe, I would put a smaller cam in. Lunati 60102 or 60103 or one of the others mentioned previously would work pretty well for you.

At 150 compression you probably don't have dome pistons even with the bigger cam bleeding a little.
Did you check more than one cylinder to make sure the compression is the same?
Assuming the compression is the same on all cylinders, just swap out a Lunati 60103 like Ozz said with the alex springs and it will be a great street machine. Plus the smaller cam should bring the compression up a little also.
