Fuel Filter Change

I changed my fuel filter the other day and had some issues. Now I removed the gas cap to relive pressure and disconnected the battery so the pump wouldn't turn on. Does anyone know why fuel would keep coming and not stop?? I lost two gallons and didn't have much left in the tank when I was done.

Re: Fuel Filter Change

It's normal in my experience. But two gallons is a bit much even if you were doing it as slow as molasses.

Re: Fuel Filter Change

There's no way you lost 2 gallons of fuel by changing a fuel filter. Fuel will come out of the lines now that you've removed the filter because they're being drained. The reason you disconnect the battery is so you don't ignite anything and become a fireball. The fuel pump will not come on if the car is off.

Here's what i do:

1) disconnect battery
2) remove gas cap to vent pressure out of the tank.
3) go to the engine, find the fuel test port (or fuel line, sorry not familiar with TBI) and with a rag, relieve the pressure in the rail and lines (by doing this, it doesn't mean the lines are bone dry. There's still unpressurized fuel sitting in the lines. This will come out when the filter is removed.)
4) Go under the car and crack open the filter fittings. Watch your eyes and face as fuel will probably squirt out.
5) let lines drain out. It may seem like a lot, but it barely filled the bottom of my black oil change pan.
6) once lines have drained out, clean up line fittings if they're dirty/rusty (don't use anything that will make sparks!). Install fuel filter and reverse the directions.

Re: Fuel Filter Change

I know it was two gallons because I had a gallon can underneath the car and had to empty it twice. Yes it was a slower rate as I did not jack the car up much.
