Oil question.
Hi,
I have a 89 camaro rs with a 350 tbi edelbrock carburetor and I am wondering how many quarts it should take and if mobil 1 5w 30 is ok?
Also, what should my oil pressure be at all times...what is normal pressure reading?
Thanks.

Re: Oil question.
5 quarts, including the filter.
yes, Mobil 1 5w 30 is perfect if it doesn't leak and/or burn oil.
oil pressure warm- 30 psi at idle, with an additional 10psi per 1000 rpm, but don't freak out if you never see higher than 50.

Re: Oil question.
if your engine has more than ,say 50,000 miles .I would not use synthetic oil .it WILL leak. it is so much more "slippery" than conventional oil. that it will find its way out ,everywhere

Re: Oil question.
I have an old Caddy with 250,000 miles on it that I use synthetic oil in. I started using it at about 40,000 miles. No leaks at all and the cars still runs perfectly. Other than a new alternator, starter, and water pump the engine has never been touched.
I also run it in my Camaro with no leaks. I think if you have a leaker, it's going to leak with whatever oil you put into it.
For the OP. You'll save yourself a lot of grief by buying a service manual for your car.

Re: Oil question.
Stay away from synthetics, the OEM engine was not manufactured to run on it and is a waste of money. Conventional 10w30 year round or 5w30 for the winter, usually put the 5w30 in the fall if you drive year round which I assume you don't.
The tolerances on a late model engine are much tighter.
Many new cars run synthetic oil from the factory because the engine was designed to run on it for best performance, emissions, & fuel economy.
Don't get sucked into the hype... you will not see tremendous power gains.. etc etc. by using it in a 25 year old engine that was not made to run on it. All you will do is spend more money and starting leaking / burning oil

LOL comparing a Caddy engine to a SBC Chevy engine is like comparing apples and oranges. Caddy was the standard by which all others are judged.. an old 472 Caddy is one fine extremely well built motor..
Unless you have the HT4100 engine which you were lucky if it lasted 40,000miles let alone 250,000.

Re: Oil question.
It's actually a 93 with a 4.9 in it. Only 4 years newer than my Camaro. I can only go by my experiences. There may easily be legitimacy in what you say and synthetics may not be for everyone, but they work for me.

Re: Oil question.
Thank you all for your replys.
I have always ran mobil 1 full synthetic in all my gm cars and never had any issues...I understand full synthetic is much thiner than your standard conventional oil, so if you have an engine that burns or leaks full synthetic is not recommended.
This engine has been rebuilt, it's not the original engine.

It was the previous owner from the guy I bought it from, he didn't ask amy questions obviously, otherwise I would know.
It's cast iron block.my profile picture is the engine.

Re: Oil question.
jeebus... people still buy into the myths about synthetic oil?
i can say from my own experiences over the last 15 years that synthetics are better in every way than regular oils.. everything i've put it in has run better and gotten better gas mileage than with regular oil- my Nova gained 200rpm of idle speed and got crisper throttle response just from changing from Valvoline 10w-30 to Mobil 1 10w-30... the only time i don't run Mobil 1 in a vehicle is when it leaks or burns a lot of oil, otherwise it gets the synthetic.
i know the counter argument will be that it's more expensive- well, i buy the 5 quart jugs of Mobil 1 at Wal Mart for $26- just over $5 a quart... regular oil is in the $4 a quart range at most places these days- more if it's got the magic new Dexos marketing hype label attached to it- and you can leave the synthetic in the car for twice as long... add in the fuel savings, and it's stupid to not run a synthetic in a car that doesn't leak or burn oil.

Re: Oil question.
Exactly!
You get what you pay for!
People say oil is oil...that's not true at all!full synthetic is made for a reason...bottom line.

Re: Oil question.
Will synthetics add 10 horse power like some say? NO. But there is a reason there are so many synthetic oils out, because they work. They can get in places that a convetional oil can't and they take longer to break down. I used Mobil 1 in my 90k mile 305 and plan to use it after my 383 has 1000 miles on it.

Re: Oil question.
The 383 TPI in my `88 Iroc had about 33,000 miles on the engine when I bought it. No leaks anywhere on the engine. After switching to full synthetic the rear main developed a major leak after a few thousand miles. I also switched to full synthetic in the trans, I had to reseal the entire trans due to leaks. If I had to do it again I would stay with conventional oils. I can`t say for sure the switch caused the leaks but nothing leaked on my car until after I made the switch.
