Re: Closed/open loop operation

Closed loop is based on Engine temp sensor and the O2 sensor operating properly.

Cold start up will default to engine warm up mode.. once the engine coolant gets up to temp the coolant sensor and O2 sensor will "tell the ECM" to switch to closed loop mode
which simply means the ECM will try to maintain a stoich A/F ratio until you go WOT based on default data programmed into the ECM by General Motors.

if all the sensors are working properly (no ECM trouble codes) then it should be fine.

Re: Closed/open loop operation

you should be able to monitor the live data stream using something like WinALDL and an appropriate cable/laptop. It will also help immensely in diagnosing your poor economy to watch the live data stream.
