85 Ecu in 92 car?
Found a really clean 85 TPI setup, manifold, runners, plenum, throttle body, for a steal. He is including his ECU as well. Curious if his ECU is any different than mine. Both 305 TPI cars. Both T5 cars.

The 85 ecm is regarded as terrible compared to later ecm's. Fbodys only used it in 85. A lot of people upgrade to the 86-89 ecm when converting their 85 cars. On a 90 or later, like yours, I would reccomend going with a speed density system. It's just easier to install. The link helps explain why the 86 ecm is better over 85's.http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~davis/z28/ecm_swap/

Re: 85 Ecu in 92 car?
New question, how about converting my 92 TPI setup, to a 85 TPI setup keeping my ECU. I know its maf, vs MAP. Different angles etc. And the CPI hole. I dont want to do this, however. The throttle body on my car is shot. My runners are dented from a motor swap. Among other things.
1. I assume I could use my existing manifold to keep the angles correct, right?
2. How would my ECU react to the MAF system?
3. Could I keep it a map system somehow by making changes?
I do have the wiring harness for the 85 as well.
Thanks for the info guys!

Stay speed density. Use nothing maf related. You could use the runners if you block the cold start hole. The throttle body has different linkage. You might be able to use the throttle cable from an older car but I'm not sure if the tv cable or cruise control will hook up like normal but I don't see why they wouldn't. Honestly just find the correct 90 and later stuff. It'll be much easier and they really aren't that expensive or hard to find. There are a couple on the classified boards right now.

If you like your sanity, stay as far away from a tpi maf as possible unless you find a new old stock one. They worked well 30 years ago, but in time they fail and screw with you.

Re: 85 Ecu in 92 car?
Gotcha, wont be messing with the tv cable as I have a T5, and my cruise control is deleted. But, thanks for the info. Really, I just need to buy a throttle body and a new computer to get things running again as my TB wont retract all the way, have a return spring on it now but its not perfect. And my computer is causing my car to die randomly. Thanks for the info and I will take your guys' advice!
