92 Firebird gas tank removal?

Working on brother's 92 Firebird, fuel pump quit. He bought the car new, won't do the floor cut in that car. Got the exhaust system off, cross link bars off, shocks unhooked, rear end down as possible. Tank just won't come out. This tank has a relief area just over the rear pumpkin, helps but not enough. Any tricks to getting this tank out without removing the rear end? The fuel fill neck just won't clear. Thought about cutting the neck and rejoining with hose and clamps. Who the heck designed this mess, and with pumps that quit at 80k miles. Help!

Re: 92 Firebird gas tank removal?

the trick is having the rear axle down far enough . remove the brake hose first. laying under the car , you rotate and bring the right corner of the tank down first. it just falls out after that

Pulled the hose off, dropped and rotated the tank as you said.

Just a FYI, that's a baffled 1LE tank, which became standard for all 3rdgens around 90-91.
The double sided fuel strainer is a tell tail sign.

Re: 92 Firebird gas tank removal?

Got to do this in the next couple weeks. Never done it before. Should I be concerned with keeping the rear-end centered when I reinstall everything?

No.

The panhard bar takes care of that for you.

Re: 92 Firebird gas tank removal?

Doing this during the week this week. I was hoping to avoid disconnecting the rear brake line. Looks like there's no way around it?

Re: 92 Firebird gas tank removal?

Just have to remove the bolt that holds the T fitting to the rearend, that will let you bend the lines a little bit for more clearance.

Re: 92 Firebird gas tank removal?

I need new hoses so I am going to replace them when I do the tank. Should give me more room to get the tank out.
