Pulling my freaking hair out....

I have a 89 IROC that had a rebuilt engine when I purchased the car. I am searching the numbers to verify what it is. Its a 350 Roller engine with 5.7LG SGI on the back. One the block is it stamped 638 near the plug. On the engine its stamped V0326SAF which I cannot find the SAF listed.

I am hoping somebody here knows or has ideas what this is/was?

The VIN shows 350 TBI which I though they didn't make in 89. Funny thing the engine is TPI with TBI heads. 14102193

VIN 1G1FP2188KL165195

Displacement (CI): 347.83534133997

Displacement (L): 5.7

Fuel Type - Primary: Gasoline

Engine Configuration: V-Shaped

Fuel Delivery / Fuel Injection Type: Throttle Body Fuel Injection (TBI)

Engine Manufacturer: CPC

I ID'd the block here http://www.jimsperformance.com/blocks.html

Re: Pulling my freaking hair out....

Do what now? 8th digit of the vin is 8, which is 350 TPI. The 638 block is an 87-95 350 block. Could be a TPI block, or TBI block, whatever. The 14102193 heads are swirl port 305 TBI heads. None of that really matters since it's mismatched and who knows what parts someone may have used in the rebuilt or Chinese fire drill.

Re: Pulling my freaking hair out....

Thanks for the input... It runs strong an clean and does not leak a drop. Just really was trying to figure out what was done. So many different findings when looking. Some say Truck some say car. Its a roller block for sure just from what. One person stated trucks got flat tappet cams not roller... One engine ref site even stated some 350's had TBI heads 14102193.

350 5.7 87-92 8 V8 OHV, RWD, PFI/TBI, roller lifters, center bolt valve covers, high swirl intake ports 14093638 14088526 14011148 14088526 14088535 14102193 14102191 10110810

One comment I found here from RBob stated they were used on 350's. Even my VIN says TBI when I look that up. That is why I am pulling my hair looking. It runs great and I don't drive fast. I do that in my 2018 SS.

Re: Cylinder head casting # 14102193 They are 350 (5.7l) TBI swirl port heads. Never factory installed on a TPI engine.

RBob.

Re: Pulling my freaking hair out....

I'll say it again... 8th digit of your VIN you posted is an "8", therefore the car the VIN was matched to, left the factory as a 350 TPI.

GM used the same block castings for various applications. In a truck they often won't have the roller cam installed, even though the block has provisions for the roller cam. Usually in a car application they were rollers. The stamped steel 'spider' above is part of the roller cam system, so it has a roller cam now.

The heads really don't matter. 305 or 350, they're TBI swirl port heads that are pretty much terrible for performance.

PS - There's no need to bump multiple threads asking the same questions. The same people that look at one thread, will generally be the people that see another thread. If anything it makes things more complicated, and your chances of getting good info go down.

Re: Pulling my freaking hair out....

Thanks. So to make things right assuming the bottom end was rebuilt correctly all I really need to do is get TPI heads on the car and make sure the cam is correct for the year?

Those heads may be the original heads. By 1989 the only iron 350 heads GM had in the assembly plant would have been TBI truck units.

Re: Pulling my freaking hair out....

Those are not the original heads. Should be 083 heads. Original TPI engines didn't get the swirl port heads. I'm going to say probably a crate engine replacement. Truck engines didn't get roller cams. Cadillacs and some Caprices got roller engines with the 193s.

Thanks... that goes along with what I have been reading. HP wise which I don't care about is only around 20HP difference. Since it runs really good its probable not worth messing with. If I feel the need to go fast I will just hop in the 2018 SS ..

Re: Pulling my freaking hair out....

I'm like you. It wont be a rocket with the correct heads anyways. If it runs correct id leave it alone too. Nice car btw, but I absolutely love your 83.
