​​ Decided to rid the heat soak problem by purchasing the LT1 starter for the fix. Upon install I felt those 2 bolts snug by the threads but the LT1 starter has minimal rocking therefore I have shims on hand but no micrometer to make this a successful install. I included the Dorman shim thicknesses in the pic and I'm guessing it'll require a LOT of shims and I feel that's wrong vs the big stock starter that requires no shims but I know you're all going to tell me it's a trial and error fitment.

I also have to get those two knurled bolts as the smaller bolt has a slight strip on the first two threads so that'll be a GM dealer trip for me.

I'm asking did any of you have these same issues as I'm having and what GM part numbers would be good for a successful fix? The longer bolt is exactly 5 inches from crown to the bottom tip. The short bolt is 2.25 inches both measured by a tape measure. It's the shimming I'm lost on. How to shim with the least amount of attempts with a lone paper clip hack?

Most engines require no shim at all.

It's easy enough to put shims in, or take them back out, by removing only the outer bolt.

A die will clean that bolt right up. No need for a trip to the stealership just for that. However they might not be the right length, if they're not the ones specifically for that starter. In which case you may not have much choice, as it looks to be the case: looks like those are too long. Easy enough to check, just stick em in the starter, and see how much of the knurled part is exposed. Should be right at half of it. Much more than that, and they won't tighten up in the block. Check the Help! aisle at the parts stores for them first though.

Yes, those bolts look too long. You need shorter STARTER bolts, not generic hardware store bolts.

The shims are for correcting a too tight gear mesh. They go between the starter and the block.
The shims are not for taking up extra length due to too long bolts. Washers are used for that.
