I am trying to follow the buildup of the 1982 Camaro 305 V8 in the March 1999 Issue of Car Craft. However, I'm trying to build this for my 1992 305 V8. I have some questions about the cam selection. Car craft used XE262H-10 (Specs Below). I emailed Comp Cams for the equivalant cam for my roller setup (Email Message Below). The XR270HR-10 cam they suggest seems to be a little diffrent, is this to compensate for the roller lifters? And, the XR270HR-10 is a RETRO-FIT cam, does this make a difference? Also, The description of both cams says it has a noticeable idle. How noticeable is it? If your on a date at a stop light, will she ask, "What is wrong with your car?"

Jeff, sure we have a roller cam that matches that grind number camshaft and if
you order that in K-kit you will receive a roller timing set also. I have
included the specs below.

I'm not so sure. The specs for each cam is different. The lift on both the intake and exhaust has at least .03 differance between the two. I understand the shapes of each is a little different because one is flat and one is a roller, but shouldn't these numbers be fairly close. Also, the XR270HR-10 beinhg a retrofit bothers me when they have a section on their website that is dedicated to cams for cars that had originally came with a roller cam.

Dont get the retrofit cam because you can just get the 87-95 roller cam and it fits perfectly. Those are the same cams, its just the roller can have more lift because of the faster ramp speeds and more lift=more power. Dont forget to look at Comp's lineup of TPI camshafts. That's what I got.
Oh and what have you done to your 305 TBI? cause for a fairly stock TBI, thats way too big of a cam

However, right now the engine is farly stock. I was leaning toward that cam for a couple of reasons. One, the car craft issue showed an increase of 41 hp just by switching the cam. Also, I was planing on getting an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake, a set Hooker Long Tube Headers with 3" exhaust, and, if there is still money left in the budget, some heads. Just trying to match the cam to my future plans of the engine. I noticed you have a comp cam, do like it? Is the lobe separation 110* or 112*? That's my big apprehension. I really do like a very smooth idle and the xr270hr-10 specs has it listed as noticeable idle.
I'm still little confused on what to do. The idea of going to a different engine (Lt1 or Ls1) is starting to be more appealing to me, especially after seeing how much the k-kits cost.
After posting this, I started digging around on Comp Cam's website. I found the technical articles about cams in their online catalog. I should have read this first, instead of jumping to cams and trying to figure out what everything meant on my own. For all those that want to know about cams, read it. It's pretty lengthy (I read about 50 pages), but well worth it.
Well I dont know if you missed my mods, but their in my sig. The duration on the cam is what u need to look at, and with my higher flowing heads, I can run this cam with good results. The LSA on my cam is 112*. I hope you know something about burning chips and winadl cause with that much duration, the computers gonna go nuts. Car Craft was working with a non-computer controlled engine.
