iroc vs 6 cyl mustang
i recently bought a 88 Iroc with a 305 TPI...it has a new (stock) rearend and flows....my friend has a 2001 mustang with V6 stock...supposedly it has 193 HP and mine's got 195 plus whatever i can get outta the flows and k&n filters. I always make fun of him cuz hes got a mustang of course and its only a six...do u think that i should be scared, do u think he might win in a race, should i keep my mouth shut?....thanks

He'll probably be somewhere in the low to mid 15's (you did say 5 speed, right?). MM&FF was able to get one of the newer V6's to run a 14.9x in an article a while back.

i wouldnt worry too much. they def have no off the line torque, so thats where you have a big advantage. but nic is right, with a 5 spd they can be in the mid 15's...

I'm thinking you'll take him with your off-the line torque, and he just won't be able to make up the difference. I stayed ahead about a car length of a 94 Mustang 6 cylinder 5-speed with my 3.1, but it was probably only b/c the guy who drives it can't shift at all. But then again, the 94's and 95's with the 3.8's only had 140 horsepower, same as mine, right? The newer 6 cylinder's are pretty fast, if driven right though.

Woah, I didn't know the newer stangs ran that fast! I knew they were alot faster than the 94/95's (and subsequently why I never even tried to race them!), but that's pretty damn good for a 6. What do the GT's run then?

You'll beat him with your torque off the line? nah uh. If you're auto and he is stick you'll be about even, but you may pull a bit. If you're stick and he's auto..well it shouldn't be close then.

The GT's have 260HP and if well driven can run low 14's to 14flat and maybe a 13.9 if you are good.

aah another V6 mutang driver thinking his car is fast because it bears the mustang name. I used to get them every time with my '84 T/A ,305 HO (190hp stock),700r4,3.73 posi,K&N,headers,borla,re-worked q-jet carb and better HEI ignition. I'm not sure how much more power that all amounted to, but I took them out every time! GTs were challenging and only fell victim with a bad driver. you don't have 3.73s,but the TPI torque should make up for that. some of the new V6 american cars are more effiecient than older american V8s. all you have to do is get rid of the factory garbage choking up the engine and you will be combat effective amonst all these new toy cars coming out these days.

My friend has a 2000 V6 and went 15.4 at 90 with just a short throw shifter.
I know not one person aill believe me, so I don't know why I even bother putting this up!!!

I thought the 305 TPIs had like 220hp?? arent the 94-95 mustangs the heaviest? I know my dads is pretty slow and his is the GT. I dont think it would break mid 15s. Id still rather have a 5.0 GT than a newer v6. If not for the mods for the sound.

If it's off the line you will take without a problem. From a roll it will be very close. At least thats my experience from racing my friend in his 2001 V6 a while back. We ran from a 30-40 roll and were dead even till we had to shut down cuz of traffic. Later on we ran from a stop and I took him easily till about 50mph.
Race him and tell us how u did against the stang. Good luck!

All I have to say is jocww is an idiot.
This race is going to be pretty frikin' close. The '88 IROC is a dog with a 305 and auto, and it's freakin' terrible if it's got the 2.73 rear gears. Plus you have to figure in milage on the hp numbers. So 195 horse stock, but w/ 100,000 miles probably still isn't 195 maybe 170 if lucky.
Dude, my money is on the drivers not the cars in this one.
Later, Garrett

Totally believable. I've seen magazines run a 99 v6 15.1 before. I know they are relatively quick. It only takes a good driver to beat you.

Race him from a stop. I've driven a 99 mustang from a stop, and they are the most difficult car to launch well that I've ever driven. They have an open differential, plenty of torque and scrawny hard-compound tires. If he doesn't launch right, it'll be a 16 second car. That said, if he does launch right, he will win. Don't worry, though, 9/10 people will never launch that car right.

Just to add to all these post: My friend has a '02 V-6 5-speed. I raced him like 5 times. Almost everytime either he is spinning or I am. But ONE time on 421 @ a stop light we both hit it (with no spinning), it was tit for tat all the way to about 35mph then I started to pull on him (his every shift was his weak spot)
Also, he is a pretty good driver. not as good as me though....:lala:
Telling you what car I was driving might help eh? Its a 88 305TBI
