Heard some really good excuses for losing last night!1

Alright, this is a funny story. We are sitting at the local cruising spot in tucson, and this stang pulls in sounding kinda mean. He tells everyone he's looking for runs and that his car cant' be beaten by LS1's and the like. So we go race this 60's mustang that claims he ran 12's and wanted to run people, first race from a stop light, we beat him by about 3-4 car lengths, second race from a roll, we keep pulling a car length and more until the mustang misses a shift (it was a converted 5 speed). We are happy with the win and pull back into the cruise spot. We get out to talk to him and the guy acts very suprised asking to look under the hood. First thing out of his mouth:

"My car is detuned, The carburetor is a 650 double pumper instead of my normal 750 double pumper, I have stuff in the car weighing it down, i think my timing is off, I didnt' have my slicks on today"

I **** you not thats what he said word for word over and over again. It was hallarious.

So we ask him again, "so what do you think you run?" and they say "high 12's, but my car is detuned" and we say "well the car you just raced runs 15.1, what happened?"

We offer to race them in a REAL 12 second car (my firebird sitting right next to us) but they decline hahah what fun. Anyways, we raced them in sleeper89rs 305 carbed 3.73 geared camaro. Good times.

Chaulk another one up for the lame *** excuse catagory. If you lost, you lost. Who cares, all it means is you need to "re-tune" your 12 minute car to run better.

My question though is if his car ran 12's, now it loses to a 15.1 second car, he detuned it to run amost 3 seconds slower? Man, this car MUST have been running like ****. Some of the jokers on Speedway kill me. I also wonder what he would have said if you did actually run using the Firebird. Just freakin kills me.

That just kills me..............and why would someone want to "detune" their car??????? I have never seen someone that wanted to bolt on parts to make it run slower.
tell that guy to buy a civic.

Well actually, earlier in the night, I was messing around with him in my firebird.............we go from a slow roll, and since my firebird doesn't really hook till third, I start from 2nd. Sling shot past him like he was stuck in reverse. This was right before we pulled over to talk to him, then Mike raced him. Here's what he said "man that thing looks pretty decent, but you started from 1st right? Man My car is not that quick from first" and here's what I said "uh no actually I had to lean on it lightly in 2nd so it wouldn't spin" his reaction. "oh....*confused look*.....I see." hah. Then we raced him in Mike's car, pulled over, talked to him again, and asked if he wanted a full on race versus a solid 12 second car to see where his car stands. hahahah. I hope I see that guy at the track this Friday, see what his car really runs. I love it when people that think they run 12's see a real 12 second car, and its like reality slapping them in the face. hah.

Always good to win with an underdog, and it's understandable if you lose, too. Have your cake and eat it too.

Actually, even a 289 should be running 15s...He was probably one of those "I-THINK-I'm-a-mechanic" guys who hurt more than improve what they work on.

maybe with modern goodies or better drivers and traction. most RSs I see run 16s as well, but a few have cut 15s bone stock. usually the manual ones. the 351 powered Mustangs are usually the fastest ones I've seen.

It was a test drive back in the 60s. It was like 15.7 or something. But there's a possibility it was the HO version. The author has a strange way of writing.

Were you talking about 351 C or W?

750 DP on a 289, huh? Hmmm. Slicks? For what? I love the 302 but even it is not exactly a torque monster. And how much did he have in his car? They can only hold what- 900 lbs? Let's see.

Let's say high 12 means 12.8. We'll allow him a bad launch because of not having his slicks. 13.8. Let's give him 900 lbs of extra weight. 14.7. Carb shouldn't have hurt because a 750 sounds too big, but let's chop off a little more. 15.0.

I'm not a mechanic or professional by any means, but guys like him make me more confident.

Windsor, though the cleveland was a far better motor IMO, it was a bit faster with the 4V motor. only caught on in Australia though :-/

4V heads, some porting, a good aftermarket intake, and a nice cam should see 450 HP without a problem. 351Cs are torque monsters due to their head design, so reasonably 550 ft. lbs and 450 HP. Throw it in a fox body and run very respectable times

Yep. But if you take a looks at ON PAPER stats...that could confuse you. Stock, during the 70s...all 3 351s put out almost EXACT numbers ay close to the ame RPM. It's the potential that makes them different. The Windsor is an AMAZING engine, but the Cleveland, from what I have seen, has more performance potential, especially if you're running it in a heavier car as its torque would make it a better choice than the Windsor. The Windsor can have a little bit of torque too, though.

What kind of 5 speed did this guy have? I've never heard of a 5 speed on a Mustang. Ijust realized...Are there ANY 289 Mustangs that run 12s?
