Lost to a neon......twice.

Ok I have the car in my sig. A buddy of Mine has a 96 ACR neon, with pretty much built engine. I know he has 10.5:1 pistons, titanium rods, CAI, a new intake manifold, full exhaust, chip and so on. It is a 5 spd, and weighs about 2200 lbs.

Well about a week ago, we have nothing to do, so we go cruising in our cars. We stop on a long, straight, deserted back road, and decide to see what the cars have.

On his call, we both took off. I Hooked perfectly, and he spun. So i took him by about a half car or so out of the hole, and through 2nd gear, where he spun again. by the time we hit about 50, he took off like a bat out of hell on me. I shut down when he had about 3-4 cars on me.

He decided that kill wasnt enough, so he requested a 15mph roll. I agree since its a friendly race.
He decided to give me the jump. When i hit it, i was in first, and so was he. He hooked perfectly and put numerous car lengths on me when i shut down at about 50 or so.

We took his car to the track a few weeks ago where he clocked off a 14.7, with no traction. Even hitting second in his car at the track was horrible, he would hit the rev limiter.

anyway, it was a fun race, and I am glad nobody saw me get spanked by a stock looking 1st gen neon. lol

I used to think those were goofy little cars, but I've seen enough to know that some of those have potential.

I'd be weary of any Neon that wanted to race, there are a couple good engine swaps for those and turbos are easy to put together too.

The guys with the fastest Neons usually keep them as stock looking as possible, while the fakers sport aluminum wings and body kits.

Better luck next time!

Have you run it since you adjusted the timing? I would guess you should run at least in the high 15's if the engine isn't too worn.

Any import that runs times like those or even shaves a full second off of his stock times N/A has my respect. To many people just slap turbos or nitrous on there cars and thats that. It really takes a skilled person to go all motor on a 4 banger.

what's even better is a good N/A four banger with a turbo and a shot of NOS...lot's of fun!

I'm pretty sure Dodge doesn't make American cars these days, but what difference does that make?

My friends' 98 neon with some mods like CAI, exhaust, think some pulleys, headers and ground effects/rims/suspension ran mid/high 14's with a completely gutted interior. Very light and pretty quick.

He then slapped on a turbo and within weeks he blew it up cuz the motor bottom end was all stock and high mileage. Oh well, I knew it was coming.

I am one of those people that fears certain 4 cylinders. At least with my nearly stock IROC.

There are a lot of low 14, high 13 4 cylinders in town. Until I have a car that I know can smoke them, I guess that thought will still be in place.

I raced on of the newer ones (2000+) from a 30 mph roll, he got the jump (I didn't know he wanted to race), I kept it even with him about half a car ahead (nobody pulled). Then we wen't from a slight roll (maybe 5-10mph?) and I got him by about 2 cars, I gotta say, those cars aren't too shabby, but then I only have a V6.

How much?

If they really were titanium, they're worth twice the book value of the car they went into...

I think he is referring to Mitsubishi. Probably uses thier engine or chassis.

It sucks. My car is has an LG4. It runs high 16s/low 17s. Its zero to 60 time is 9.19. The only race I've one is against a cavalier, well, and my firends 300ZX. I've lost to a probe, an sti, and more I could imagine.

0-to-60 is a 9.19 stock? I knew these engines weren't that great in their stock form, but jeeze... that sounds just horrible.

That's with 3.73 gears and an open element. The rear tires are 215s though. I think the first gear of a 200C is 2.74.

This time was with my stop watch and an 80 thousand mile car.

OUCH!!! The LB8 (2.8 MPFI V6)runs just a hair slower than that (mid 17's usually).

Seriously man, I hope that was enough to make you consider doing an engine swap. I know it was all in fun, but that's just a reminder as to what can happen to you with that motor.
