'84 305 vs. new WRX
i have an '84 Z 305 with roller rockers, exhaust, and a 4 barrell carb. about twice a week i find this WRX, not STI, on a bridge by my house(the bridge is a diff. county then what i live in and really long so its perfect for racing) and i have tryed to run him once but he didnt want to. i was just wondering if i could take him, never raced a WRX before.

I think you have a good chance with your setup if he is stock, but once or if he starts upgrading it, they can get pretty fast.

like stu said, the 06 wrx are 2.5 and i understand the awd setup is upgraded in some way. i think if its a pre- 2006 wrx you might stay with him from a roll but chances are he will still pull a little. but from a dig he will murder you off the line and wave goodbye...

agree with both of the previous post. those things murder cars off the line and a 06 would most likely murder you from a roll too. The 2.0 i think would be a little closer.

I think the WRX would blow your doors off from a dig with all wheel drive. your car has more tourqe than him, so it might be interesting from a roll. There have been STI subaru's for a long time in japan but Im not sure prior to 2003 is the usa

ya i think i would get burnt bad too. i have a friend that might be able to get me a 350 for pretty good price so that would help alot, but i think i will also go to fuel injection. and i really need to find someone to help me get a good tune. my roller rockers are a little off so that wouldn't work in my favor either.

2002 WRX vs. my 400ci 84 z28
check out the attachment. This is a gtech comparison between the two cars. He kills me off the line, and i kill him anywhere above 60 mph. To get his advantage off the line, he drops the clutch at 6000rpm and smokes all four tires. By comparison, i leave from idle at 1/4 pedal to keep from melting the tires. We did race after using the gtech in each car, as expected, he bet me out of the hole BIG time. I reeled him in and drove past by about 600 feet, and continued to walk away. His info is in black, mine in red.
In short, If he is not particularly quick shifting, and not willing to dump the clutch big time, you have a chance, albeit a small one of coming out on top. But if he gets a good jump and doesn't bog, your in trouble. You really have to hate the WRX, and dump it hard to make it get the 4.9sec to 60mph. Otherwise, they run about 5.8 to 6 seconds to 60 with a quick 1-2 shift.

It still doesn't matter. He really hasn't done anything to make more power so in essence he's around the stock power level. Unless the WRX guy has Downs Syndrome there is no way the Z is going to win.

Not necessarily, if I may explain....
I'll attach another run in the same WRX, and a run with my original 84' 305 200000 kms on it, with headers, carb work and a full 3" cat-back. This is in a reasonable state of tune, but doubt it would get much better....
so...say the wrx lauches without killng the clutch, figuring an easy win (+0.9 sec in quarter), he shifts a tenth of a second slower than my very quick shifting aquaintance in the WRX in the thumbnail, three shifts equal +0.3 seconds. This gives a total loss of 1.2 seconds in the quarter to the WRX, or a 13.933+1.2=15.133 second pass....notice my time with the old 305, 15.196....easily made up on the start, or lost with just one poor shift. The automatic in the Z won't make mistakes shifting, and will launch damn near the same 9 times out of ten.
I repeat, if he does not dump the clutch hard, and he isn't particularly fast shifting you have a chance, at the worst you lose to a WRX and apparently no one is surprised so no big deal. However, if you hang with him, or perhaps manage to nudge ahead, you just beat a WRX with a 305 automatic and embarass the hell out of him. If he gets the jump with a good launch you know the race is over for you. I'd go for it, he has more to lose than you.

I have a five speed and this kid is not that good at driving his car, so I don't expect him to get a good start or good shifts, and I would say I'm not to shaby going through the gears. So I think I will take a run with him cus if I win than I would be able to say I left a WRX with a 305, something to brag about.

let us know how it turns out...
I'd expect your 5 speed to give you a quicker 1/4 time than my old auto if you shift well. It's definitely worth a few mph over my old setup too due to the lighter weight and less power losses.

i think i will take him, i saw him this morning but never got the chance. i will try tomorrow, and if i dont find him on the way to school, i will find him at school and tell him we need to run. i'll tell you how it goes, i dont mind as much if i lose cus im running a 305.
