Won a shitty race...
Well, I blew away a civic hatch on the highway. It was blowing oil smoke out the fart can muffler, and was lowered on red painted steelies. I was cruising in 5th gear, about 85 or 90mph, and he kept using VTECH to try and keep up with me, must have been in like 3rd gear near redline. All the sudden he guns it, so I put my car in 4th and rolled on the gas. Left him dead in the water all the way to 110, and he was leaving a huge blue could behind him!! I got about 7 or 8 cars on him in that time!!
I know its not a huge accomplishment, but this is kinda the first time I have won a race. Everything else I have lost to, except one other civic that is my buddies, and its real nice (not riced out like some). I pulled him by maybe 2 cars from 50-80. He had 2 more ppl in the car tho, and I had just me. So, its kinda unfair to call that a race.
It was just a nice change of pace, to actually be able to pull in front of somebody. I was so used to loosing to my buddies maximas, integras, and jettas, all CAI and exhaust. I guess I found a good way to win a race:
1. Save used motor oil after changing it
2. Funnel used motor oil into opponents tank, before race, when heads are tunred

It is nice to win. I havent raced a whole lot but ive beat about 3-4 cars. A older civic an accord and 2 trucks, but this old el camino came up on me one day and blew me away it was so embarrasing, he took me by like 5 cars, lol.

I want to do the GMPP vortec heads, GMPP vortec TBI manifold, LT1 cam, EBL flash, CFM Tech inj. pod spacer, bigger injectors, aeromotive VAFPR, better FP in the tank, 2055's or dyno don, test pipe, and a 3" flowmaster.
And yeah those 305 El Camino's are retarded fast - they have that carb motor like the Monte SS.

Its the factory tune, stock ECM. I havnt touched the car yet, except maintenence and upside down air filter lid.
I said before, that if I ever get money to buy all the stuff above, then I will get the EBL flash to replace my stock ECM.

Re: Won a shitty race...
well, I found out the LT1 cam should work good with bone stock L31 vortecs, since the L31 in chevy pickups came with an LT1 cam in it!
Plus, the vortec heads can only take ~ .470ish lift before problems. The LT1 cam just about satisfies that perfectly. I figure, the money I would spend having the heads machined for more valve lift, I would be able to buy a nice set of patriot aluminum heads. I will never waste money like that on a car. The stock GMPP vortecs are about as high dollar as I will ever go.
I figured that the production LT4 cam is almost identical to the LT1 cam, used with the stock 1.5 rockers. Except harder to find used. I would love the LT4 hot cam, but it has way too much lift, too rough of an idle, and would be impossible for a beginner like me to try and tune for on TBI.

Re: Won a shitty race...
actually the L31 came with the small B-body Lt1 cam.CAMSHAFT SPECS:
INTAKEURATION/LIFT
@0.05 191 .418
EXHAUSTURATION/LIFT
@0.05 196 .430
LOBE SEPARATION 111
There are different specs throughout the years of the lt1 cam.
92 LT1 205/207 @ 0.050" .451"/.450" Lift, LSA 117
93-95 LT1 202/207 @ 0.050" .450"/.460" Lift, LSA 116
96 LT1 200/207 @ 0.050" .447"/.459" LSA 117
96 LT4 203/210 @ 0.050" .475"/.479" LSA 115
The specs of the ZZ4 are..
ZZ4-208/221 @.050" .474/.510
And the hot cam was.....
LT4 Hotcam
219/228 @050", Lift-.525/.525 w/1.6RR, 112 LSA
(Lift is .492/.492 w/ 1.5RR)
From what I understand about the L31 heads is that you can do a spring upgrade for relatively cheap using beehive springs. That way you can run up to a .550 lift without having to machine the guides.IIRC

Did you have the exact same motor combo & all? Maybe they changed it mid-year or something... I know my '91 305 TBI/700/2.73 'bird didn't cut off til 118.

And the 87 Iroc didn't have a part throttle downshift in the tranny. Just like the Corvette tranny.

Re: Won a shitty race...
Well, its the LO3, but I guess since it has the "formula" package, that included a higher speed governor I guess. I am pretty sure I have hit 120 in it, might have been 118 because these speedos wander a bit. Either way, it was damn close to 120 when I hit fuel cut.
About the cam. I guess I would have to watch out for what kind of car I got it out of used then. I was under the impression that all the LT1 cams were relatively the same. I would love the production LT4 cam with 1.5 rockers, then no modification. But new they are just as pricey as a comp or other aftermarket cam, and used they are hard to come by.
Are you sure that I could do .550 lift on stock vortecs, with just springs? I thought they were near their physical limits from the factory... if I even do go ahead with modding the motor, it would need to be at least as reliable as stock. So, I wouldnt want to be putting sketchy part combos together, better safe than sorry.
The LT4 hotcam (well, regrinds of it) can be had relatively cheap. From what I understand, though, it is mostly a upper RPM cam. I want to build a torque monstor motor, like a stump puller. The kind of motor that sticks you in the seat and makes you hang on. I also want a stock-sounding motor. A little rough idle is ok, but that definate lope of the hotcam would be bad. Puls, I have heard that the hotcam is a total PITA to tune around, and would be near impossible for a noob.

Re: Won a shitty race...
What did you do? gut it like I did? I'm rolling with just a driver seat and nothing else. Slowbird... From what I have been told you can get that much lift with just springs and a seal upgrade. Maybe someone who has done it will chiome in to help. I'd hate to see you spend money you don't have to.

Re: Won a shitty race...
I like the looks of that LT4 cam:
96 LT4 203/210 @ 0.050" .475"/.479" LSA 115
Looks kinda like this one? (from a TPI auto car)
85 LB9 202/206 @ 0.050" .403"/.415" LSA 114.5
TPI's are pretty torquey, I wonder how a TBI car would respond to a cam like that?
That LT4 cam should idle really good, and has plenty of lift. The duration should be good for some take off torque.

Re: Won a shitty race...
The LT4 cam specs are with 1.6 rockers.
Here is the LT1 cam specs I have:
Used in 1995-1997 Corvette and camero LT1 engines.
Duration @ .050" Lift(deg): I:201 E:208
Maximum Lift(in) w/ 1.5 rocker: I:.447 E:.459
Lobe Centerline (deg): N/A
Here is the LT4 cam specs I have:
1996 LT4 production.
Duration @ .050" Lift(deg): I:203 E:210
Maximum Lift(in) w/ 1.6 rocker: I:.476 E:.480
Lobe Centerline (deg): 115
So after using the LT4 with 1.5 rockers;
1996 LT4 production.
Duration @ .050" Lift(deg): I:203 E:210
Maximum Lift(in) w/ 1.5 rocker: I:.446 E:.450
Lobe Centerline (deg): 115
