3rd Gen Vs 05 Subaru STI

Ok so i have a Buddy who is always bad mouthin my camaro and talkin up his stock STI.

He wants to race and im going to lol... But i want to know what to expect.

I have a 350-360 Hp 350 Crate and 400 ft. Lbs of torque, a 700r4 with shift kit, 3:70 gears, and a full 3" exhaust....oh and brand new 9" rear tires.

He of course has a 300 hp/300 torque 6 spd.

We wouldnt race from a rolling start. I would make sure to go from a stop.
Even though they are AWD he knows that the trannys are weak in those things and wouldn't shift hard.

Any ideas how well i would do? Any ideas of what my 1/4 mi time MIGHT be? .. b/c i have no clue. lol

dead hook from a dig and you should have a car on him by 60, neither cars have impressive top end so it will be close. I would predict you winning by about a car and a half, just my opinion

Honestly, you may want to consider a roll start...If you go from a dig and you spin you can kiss the race goodbye, those cars can LAUNCH if driven correctly. They don't pull very well up top though. Engine dyno that motor put down 350hp? So your putting maybe 300-310 to the wheels. Thats going to make this a driver race.

go from a dig and you should have him. awd cars tend to be a bit slower off the line than rwd unless driven correctly, so dont spin and youll definately have him, his car also weighs more, race from a roll and you may have lost your advantage...

You don't want to race an AWD from a dig. That's why those cars are so impressive on the street, is because they can LAUNCH. Go from a roll, it'll even the playing field.

On the track with prepping, it's different story and going from a dig with a RWD car is no big deal. But on the street it's tough to hook up.

A rear wheel drive car will rarely beat and awd car off of the line. These new awd cars have amazing launching power.

anyone everthink about spinning the tires befor the race? theres a reason drag racers do it before a 1/4th mile.. heat up your tires clean and mae em stick to the road better.. spin them for about 25 seconds directly befor the race and brake start it at about 12-1400 u shouldnt spin too much depends on its lsd posi or open diff tthough i dont think ya mentioned that

25 SECONDS?????

It's a warm up, not a burn out contest....

I would recommend 5-10 seconds MAX...

unless you have drag radials spinning them wont help much at all... street tires are made to grip good cold and hot, the only reason for burning out on street tires even at a drag strip is to get the water off of them... if you want to launch run drag radials, and spray some vht on there nice and sticky.....

Thank you for explaining this totally new and unheard of concept!!!

Seriously guys, unless you have a really nasty car, youre not going to beat a AWD car off the line. Just do your best to minimize the loss and run him down when you get going.

Be weary of some of the AWD fruits out there, they like to do a launch and throw on the flashers and claim a win. I had a guy do that once.

yeah thats the best way, i hate it when people spin there tires throught the water that just splashed water into your wheel well to take down the track with ya.... but at my local track the way they have it set up you have to run through the water to get to the line, no way around it unless your on a bike cause there is only about a 2 ft wide space u can make it through dry...its gay but o well it is fun to roast the tires lol, but i got nitto 555rs now so i need to roastem anyway....

lol i wasnt trying to explain that like noones ever done it befor sorry but whate "could" or "might" help catch traction off the line id do but aside from that he has a decently built car vs a stock sti in a 1/4 he should have it by a car or two but idk about a 1/8 that would be a real close race to me

Spinning street tires on the street is not going to do you any good. Maybe just real quick to get the loose dirt and gravel off is all that might help you.

Bingo. Just turn them over real fast. Just a couple rotations so for maybe a second, to clean them off and you're good to go. You don't need to roast them. Does nothing.

Edit: Oh and I predict either a good race or a lose for you. Have you ever dynoed your car or had it to a track?

^^^ This is wrong. STI 6-speed transmissions can handle 500hp and 500tq. No issues. The weak transmission is the 5-speed in the WRXs.

As far as the race, you should take him from a roll. From a dig it is a driver's race. There are plenty of STIs out there with drivers who can't drive them. AWD is for crap unless you have the skill to launch it. This isn't an easy thing. It takes practice. If your friend is a good driver, then he should definitely get you from a dig. If, by chance, you win from a dig - then count your lucky stars because your friend can't drive. Stock STI's can pull 1.7 60ft times on the street when launched properly. However, again, most STI drivers can't do this.

Re: 3rd Gen Vs 05 Subaru STI

One thing I can't stand to see is when people talk of the stock WRX when we are suppose to be talking about the STI. People - please realize that a WRX pales in comparison to an STI. I have tuned WRXs, STIs, etc. WRXs put down 170whp stock. They suck. When doing a 'stage 2' setup on a WRX (Turbo Back Exhaust), they put down 220whp. Still fairly weak if you ask me. STIs lay down 245whp (not great). Add a TBE and tune and you will net 300whp.

I could go on, but I won't. I know these cars A LOT at this point. If you have specific questions, just ask.

I agree that an AWD will fly off the line but you have him dominated by miles in the torque department and the thing you need to keep in mind with a turbo-car is that the power is NOT always there like a supercharger. He has 300hp... at 7,000 RPMs. At 3,000-5,500, it's a totally different story.

Depends on the AWD in question, CFT's is uncanny either from the dig, or from the roll, Click Here....

However, again, most STI drivers can't do this.
Why is it so hard to launch AWD?? Please explain.

As I understood it a moron can launch w/o spinning because you have so much traction (four wheels).

I think the 3rd gen has this guy. His motor and gears are a great match. The STI is gonna have to run perfect to not be spanked.

sti has from what i seen and told a system that doesnt let you rabbit launch so you dsont loose traction but that 6 speed you just get started and you have to shift same up to 4 gear then it streches out some but i think the guy will take him the tired gens are TORQUE MONSTERZ as been told to me

I have a 355 making about 460 crank horsepower, 4l60 with a stage 2 kit, 2400 holeshot stall, 3.27 rear end. I doubt I could take one of those cars of the line, even if I didn't lose traction. Go for the rolling start. I smoked one of that generation of STI from a rolling start.

Oh, I run an '84 15th Anniversary T/A.

Re: 3rd Gen Vs 05 Subaru STI

alright so here is a conclusion to my race. i raced a different person's sti. stock except for an exhuast. we raced from a dig at a light. he was with me at first and then when he went to shift into 2nd... which was fast, he fell behind. we raced for a little bit, but he was not catchin up what so ever and I was going about 60-75. so i kicked the flashers on and claimed victory.... then he just pulled off onto a diff road about 1/2 mi later lol. i was pretty pleased.
