Well I own 2 camaros (Technically 3 but 1 is parts car) so I know my way around my car. My 1989 is a 350(638 block)/T-5 but I don't think it is as fast as my 1991 Camaro 350/700R4. Both TBI.
Now school just started back up again and you get all the juniors with Ricers. Well there's a kid that offered me a race. From what I saw I am going to say it was a 1995-1998 Volkwagen Jetta GLX VR6. It had a carbon fiber hood, intake and exhaust (just a muffler). Automatic. Now I looked around for recently wrenched bolts and didn't see anything and I can't see this guy working on a car let alone know what he has. He seemed pretty confident so it makes me wonder. Also he said he wants to put 100 bucks down. He also kept bugging me about it. "Come on man let's race it's a little V6 versus your V8 come on man" the normal bullshit peer pressure stuff.
I am not going to race just cause he is bugging me about it but I want/need the money and wouldn't mind a nice race. I wouldn't mind loosing but I would mind loosing money. I asked if he wants to do it as just playing around but he said no, almost like it would be a waste of time and he was in for the money. Plus if I win then obviously he won't race again for cash nor would I if he won lol.
>>Smart man saying you wouldn't race!<< Just had a high school graduate from my area smoke a tree a DIED this weekend racing(no trace of alcohol) Stay smart! This stuff scares me! My son is 15...... Not sure whose car would win just had to put my thoughts out there!
Forgot to mention, I got my dads permission and he will be there. I think we are just doing 0-60....
It's in a back road that is pretty flat. :P
I said I was "thinking" about it so it may as well be "theoretical".

is the back road asphalt or gravel or? id say atleast a car length depends on if you hook up though and for 0-60 thats what 1/8 mile? id use the 700r4 as i might find having to shift being the killer especially for that short of a distance, idk though my manual car goes to 60 in second gear and pulls hard all the way....my 700r4 not so much but its due for a rebuild among other things.
you're lucky your dad's letting you. as for the vw i know a few people with them with a 5spd they pull pretty good, but not so sure for auto. but if you get him off the line you should be able to stay ahead of him if not even, but i'm sure someone else has better input than i.
Asphalt. I was plannign to use the 91 anyway cause for some reason it is faster than the 89, and the 89 is lighter as it is a vert.

go to a local track, its not worth racing on the street no matter how much you "prepare" or if your father lets you. At the track you'll have time slips, it'll be 1/4th mi, and the surface will be prepared for maximum grip... as far as the VW, you should get some NAWS!...
Mods so far: MSD Cap and rotor, MSD ignition coil, Accel 8.8mm ignition wires, Hooker Super Comp Shortie Headers, Flowmaster 3in catback, underdrive crank pulley, custom cold air intake, NOS wet 125 shot, air foil and a lead foot! no E/T's yet. ...TURBO COMING SOON...Other mods include keyless entry and remote start, and Sequential Turn Signals.
I'm never afraid to race anyone. As far as the money goes, whether it's racing or anything else, never gamble more than you're willing to lose.

I would definately do it on the track. Not just because it's legal, but also because you will grip better on the track rather than street. On the track i've taken everything off the line that i've raced but on the street my car spins bad and I only have a V6. You're going to want to use your TORQUE to an advantage, and then hope your top end holds up in the end.
I guess nobody remembers the thread from the guy who lost his son in a race just a few months ago ( Ask the mods for the name of the thread, forgot!) It was a lonely stretch of road..... No one was around.... late in the AM..... Well at least your ole'man gave u the ok. Good Man! I would smack my boy in the back of the head.........................
I don't plan on going over 80. By then one of us lost. This is a flat, paved and straight road that has 2 lanes on each side. Even if one of us were to spin out we would just slide out into the grass. No objects to hit really besides a few 6 foot light posts (not even poles) and they would break on impact anyway.
If I do do this I understand that it is dangerous and will be VERY careful when doing it. If I see anything I don't like I will be the first to hit the brakes guaranteed. Now people are going to be "you cannot control it" and "what if" and I understand where you are coming from but you have to understand, this is a place that I wouldn't even consider a "street" race more like a drag race on a public road that most don't even know that exists.
I just want everyone know that I do understand it's dangerous but whats the point of living without making risks in your life. If it is my time to go well it's time to go.

while keeping in mind that this area is about illegal racing and we all know the risks, even 80 is dangerous
i have a good family friend whose buddy was doing burn outs in a parking lot and was drifting and just goofing off with buddies. the parking lot was more or less surrounded by grass and had no curb well one of his tires caught the lip between the grass and pavement as his car slid back onto the pavement causing the vehicle to turn over on its side or roll. he hit the side of his head while still in his car against the pavement and died instantly. he wasnt even going 50 and it was on a rather flat area he was a big guy and was buckled in, but what im saying is you never know freak accidents occur and if you have any doubt about it being safe and you walking away when push comes to shuv DONT race.
not really sure what would win the only jettas i have raced have been older ones and i smoked um bad but im sure the newer ones are fast. and as far as every one talking about freak accidents well **** happens. so what u do is race the the guy if he wins owell but if u win take the money buy a helment and try for round 2

yup, if its your time its your time. if you live in fear of dying youll never live.
i would say you have him most tuners do nothing for torq and that is what gets you off the line if you can hook the tires that is. i found a link containing almost exactly what you said the other guy had its a 1/4 mile time sheet.
also the guy that owns this time sheet is probly better at driving, than your young punk adversary. and who ever said ( since its automatic theres no driver error) your some what right by thats a dumb thing to say. my 84 is auto but i manual shift it all the time, if i didnt then my first gear would run to 5 mph 2nd to like 25 and so on. the point is if you shift it right you can do it. on my 700r4 1st=30 mph 2nd=50 mph 3rd=100 something 4th=i believe i can fly.
With a 700r4 and 3.08 gears why would you shift at such low speeds? You must be shifting under 4,000 rpm...
And if it shifts 1-2 at 5 mph at WOT your tv cable must be f'ed up.
i was just saying thats what my automatic shifts at, i would nt doubt that something is haywire with that cable... what do you mean low? 30 is top of the rpms for my engine while in first. am i missing something?
and i love peer pressure from people not to race. ultimately he will decide on what to do. and either reap the benifites or accept the looses.
