84 TA vs. 83 302 powered Ranger

howdy fellas,

i have a question for you...but first i need to give you the background. i own an 84 TA and my best friend has an 83 Ford Ranger with a 302 in it. we are gonna race at the local strip once the weather is nice. no i dont know all the specs on his truck, but heres what i know. it has a 302 out of an eighties mustang, its not the roller cammed version and i believe the cam is stock (so i think thats 85 or earlier or something), it has vacuum secondary Holley 4bbl and a Ford factory 4bbl intake (off what type of car, im not sure). on the exhaust side it has those factory mustang shorty headers and dual exhaust into a 2 inlet and 2 outlet single turbo muffler and then the dual exhaust pipes continue out to the back. i believe the transmission is a 3 speed auto (it migh be a 4 speed with OD) and it it stock. his truck has no emissions stuff on it. i dont know the rear end gear ratio.

as for my 84 Trans Am, its has an LG4 305, with an Crane Energizer 272 H10 cam and lifters, Cloyes roller timing chain, edelbrock performer intake, stock non computer controlled quadrajet, flowtech shorty headers, no cat, and a dynomax 2.5" cat back system. the ignition is a vacuum advance HEI with an MSD high energy in cap coil and accell 8.8mm wires. the plugs are stock ac delcos gapped at 0.045. all the emissions stuff is removed and i have a b&m stage 2 shift kit in my 700r4. my rear end is a non-posi 3.23.

so this leads me to my question....who will win? i think i will get killed, but i wanted to see what you guys think. we are just racing for fun, but it would be cool to surprise him by beating him...even tohugh i dont think it is possible

why dont you think you'll beat him? Carbed 302's arent very fast, plus its a truck! You'll smoke him no problem, you'd probably beat him even without the mods you listed! Now, if it were a EFI 302, it might be a different story.
You'll kick his ***!!

depending what kind of ranger the 302 is in, it will be around the same weight as your transam.
You should have the holeshot advantage since rangers are pretty light on the rear, and top speed will goto you because of your superior areodynamics.

I'd say it would be a close race if you were stock also.
but since you have all those mods I think you will waste him.
