stock numbers on 5 spd z24 cavalier
does anyone know the stock numbers on a 2002 5spd cavalier z24 are . my bro just got one and is bragging about how it can beet my stock 83 z28 . i know my car is not fast and isnt manual but i dont think you can compare a 4 cylinder 2.2liter to a 305 with massive amounts of torque. i keep asking him to race but he keeps saying hes not good enough at drivin stick yet.

A buddy of mine had one. I raced him with my 99 S-10. I had we both had five speeds, I had the 4.3L V-6. The only mod I had at the time was some wider (245/60-15) tires on my truck. I still had a traction problem off the line. He would take me through the intersection by a couple car lengths. Once I hit second I would gain about a car length back and hang there. We would run dead even then about 70 I would slowly start to pull but before I could pass him I would hit my speed limiter at 95. Race him just for the hell of it.
Good Luck,

I think it all depends if you have an LG4, LU5 or L69....
LG4 (150Hp)... It would be close, you'd take him off the line, but then he'd probably beat you before the 1/4 mile.
LU5 (175Hp)... I'd say you hav him off the line, through the 1/4 mile then he'd start to edge you out around 90.
L69 (190Hp)... You got him all the way to 130+

LOL thats funny, i Crushed one the other day comming home from work, not in the bird, i was in the GA. The cavalier was the newer 2002 model with the ECOTEC engine,i merged into the south bound highway ending up right next to him on the right side, he glanced over and punched it, his exhaust made a kinda vreeeeee sound as he passed me, i let him gain about two car lengths until i gunned mine, caught up to him side by side, he glanced back over kinda anxious, i smiled at him at floored it, exhaust let out a mild deep vrooooooom sound as i passed, guy was pissed cause when i passed him i got right infront him and he gracfully showed me the finger as i dissapeared from his sight. Keep in mind i didn't get right dead in front of him when i cut him off, i gave a good 10-15 feet, we were on the highway and i know better. Anyways it was a good kill.

It's going to take more than a stock or close to stock LG4, LU5 or L69 to beat him. None of these engines will come close. None were rated better than the 15's the Z24 can do. The early LB9 was good for mid 15's. It doesn't matter who has the torque advantage here. The previous mentioned engines will be beat from the start to finish.

If it's the new 2.2L Ecotec, it has...
140 Horsepower
150 Ft-lbs Torque
2617 lbs Curb Weight.
You will most likely get toasted, sorry to say. The Getrag 5-speed is geared pretty good, 3.58 first gear, 3.94 differential gear. The top end in those cars aren't as good, but the accelleration is not bad at all. Expect low-mid 15s with a experienced driver.

I don't know if you can just make a horsepower to weight comparison... yeah the cavalier is light and it's got equal or a bit less Hp that the Z28... but there's 90 more lb-ft of torque in the Z28 and that is about a 66% more torque than the cavalier... this is a significant difference and it pretty much makes up the weight disadvantage... it's got a lot more power to accelerate the mass. I wouldn't put the cavaleir any lower than 15.7-15.9 in the 1/4. I'd say the '83 L69 is good for low 15's (take into consideration all L69's were standard with a 3.73 rear for that year). Perhaps an LG4 with 5 spd and 3.73's would give the Z24 a good run... but not a defeat. The LU5 has more restrictive injection and 2.93/3.23 gears which probably take it just below the cavalier.
There's a lot of math to be considered and I don't know it all myself, but the only way the debate can be layed to rest is the real numbers.

The 150hp 5spd models run around a 15.9-16.0 in the mag tests I've seen. That would put it beating all of the stock 83 Z28s other than the L69... In fact it'll probably have a half second if not more on the boat anchor LG4 and Crossfire cars...

What is everyone running in L69, LU5, and LG4's
I have seen several stock 2.4 Z24's run 15.6 to 15.9 and the couple who can't drive running 16.8's.
My gf's 2.2 auto ran a best of 16.9 with a K&N and a cat back

Yeah, thats what I'm talking about... I have heard of stock LG4's running 15.7 in the 1/4 which is enough to beat the Z24 if it does run 15.9. Now granted lots of LG4's are sorry-***-oil-burning-boat-anchors... but in good tune they're not that bad.
Thats it for me, my point cannot be further argued... either accept it or not.

Look at my sig...that is only with a engine mounts...If I weighed less I would be around a 15.6 I don't know if I can beat a Z28 or not...but I wouldn't mind trying. Your brother may not be as quick...but I am sure he would be close.

i've driven many of quad 4 cav and i believe it would take a stock 305 z28 cuz that thing revs quick and it has a nice pull to it to. The shifter feel is alright but u can rip through the gears. But i would keep a look out for the superchargered one that's coming out they should be monsters.
