Weird stalling problem

Strange thing happenned to me yesterday. I go outside, start the IROC, drive away, everything's fine. Stop for gas, fill it up with 93, start her up, drive away, everything's ok. Drive to my girls house, park. Come outside maybe an hour later, start her up, drive away, no troubles at all. Go hve lunch, come out after about 45 min, again no problems. Get back to my girl's house, sit outside maybe 5 min with the car running. Again no troubles. Go to the movies, and come back out about 3 hours later.

Now the trouble starts. I start the car, starts ok. Once I put it in gear, she stalls. I'm parked on a hill, so I roll it out of the spot. Start her up again, no trouble. Idles fine, revs fine. Put it in drive, stalls. Repeat maybe 2 more times. Finally I start in neutral, rev it a little and drop it in drive. She almost stalls but starts moving. Now the funny part. I get to the end of the lot and stop, preparing for a stall, but it doesnt.

Same thing happened when I left my girl's house last night. She stalled everythime I put it in gear, until I got it moving. Then everything was fine. I even went about 3 blocks away, pulled over, shut it down, and no troubles going again.

Any ideas wtf is wrong? Once I get the car moving, the problem goes away until it sits for a few hours.

A couple of things:

1.) Check your IAC motor. The ECM is supposed to add 100 RPM when you shift from Drive to Park. Likewise, it will drop 100 RPM going the other way. If the IAC motor got hung up, or malfunctioned, it may stall the engine.

2.) There is a signal coming from a switch (should be on your shifter) which signals the ECM as to wether you are in gear or not. Perhaps this is malfunctioning?

Do Camaro and Firebirds make use of a torque convertor clutch switch? This problem sounds so similar to a problem I had with my Grand Am several years ago before I bought my Iroc. My Iroc is a 5 speed, so I don't know if the auto's have that switch or not. Just a suggestion to look into if the car has one.

Are you threatening me?!? You do not want to face the wrath of my bunghole!

Anyways, I went out lastnight, and everything was fine with the car. I'll have to see what happens this weekend.

Have you resolved your issue with the car?

I've had an '87 TPI setup in my Monte for 20,000 miles, and it recently started doing the same thing. I've replaced most of the vacuum lines, cleaned the TB, changed the fuel filter and plugs.

What's left, set minimum air for like the 37th time?

I had that trouble on my TA. Setting the minimum air speed is and should not be necessary. Your idle speed should be controlled by the ECM alone. You can do it the way I did and use the minimum air adjustment as a temporary means to keep it from stalling.

I replaced all my vacum hoses and finally my cap, rotor, plugs, wires, IAC stepper, MAF and ECU before the problem was corrected.

Every little thing I did helped with the problem. Only slightly. It wasn't until I changed the ECU that the problem stopped.

I hope that this helps. I also hope you don't have to go through all the BS I had to go through to get it fixed. It also cost me alot of cash. Hope you fair better.

I've been contemplating swapping the ECM, since I need to change the chip anyway...might as well put the new chip in the new brain, right?

Maybe it'll do it for my car too.
