Ok guys. One dumb question.

I was at a car show tonight. And I saw alot of Hot Rods running a TPI intake. But I also noticed that some of the 3rd gens had cone filter instead of the air box setup.
So, heres my question. Which is gives you better air flow. Stock air box that has been gutted, or a cone filter. Oh, also, how hard is it too hook up a cold air intake to a cone filter?

well, a strait cone filter mounted on to the tb of the set up would mean that the engine is a MAP set up, and your 87 has a MAF so you could not do that. The Filter flows very well, but it flows very hot air very well... Actualy, the camaro y snorkle will flow very well after gutting the boxes. Just take out the bottom part thats attached to the nose, and go at it man! i used a dremmel with 2 crappy cut off disks... watch out for melted plastic, cause i got it stuck all over my arms and face.. wear eye gear and something with long sleeves. good luck man. nice car too!

I am going to run the stock filter assembly on my engine, with the air boxes gutted. I have read a few threads where this has come up before and the general consensus was that the stock assembly works great. The Cone filter actually works the worst, as tested in the magnum TPI project( I think that’s what it was called).

When I did my TPI swap few years ago, all I could get my hands on at the time was a cone filter. I ran the car at the track several times. Then when I finally got a Cold Air Intake, I shaved two tenths off my track time with no other mods. Take it for what its worth, engines like cold air better than air thats been passed through a 200° radiator.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Ive been wanting to gut the boxes for a while now...looks like some other people and this thread have been also. But, when I do it I will run some duction from the fog lights to the filters. Im not quite sure how I will get them to stay.......but, duct tape fixes everything I guess. Ill keep you guys updated on this project.
