CARB -> TPI....worth it?

is it worth the time and effort to convert from carb to tpi. as of now i have an 86 monte carlo ss l69 carbed, i have a chance to get a hold of a complete 87 trans am w/ a 305 tpi. that year trans am has maf which to my understanding is more desireable than SD correct me if im wrong. would it be worth the gains to convert to tpi?

Personally, I wouldn't waste my time putting a TPI on any motor. There are much better alternatives out there.

such as.....CARB.

but if you're looking into fuel-injection, you might try the Holly Stealthram.

However, if you're going for a show-car look and not worried too much about the power side of it (unless you've got some $$$ to spend on that TPI), the TPI can be polished to a mirror shine and is a nice addition to most classic hotrod's looks.

If you're sticking with a 305 the TPI should be fine. SD has more power out of the box, however MAF is better for modifications. It learns things like cams nicely whereas SD you would definatly need to tune the prom. Don't get me wrong, prom tuning is an excellent tool but some people don't have the time or desire to do it.

i was looking to get good gas mileage, and a few guys ive talked to have dont similar swaps from carb to tpi and got upto 22 miles to the gallon. but i guess if im gonna go through all the trouble of swaping in tpi i might as well swamp in an Lt1 instead.

no intead of putting in a 305 tpi, i figured i might as well swap in a complete lt1 engine from a late model z28, and ditch the 305.

I think that there are a ton of great deals on complete LT1's with computer and harness on the web. I kind of wish that I had bought an LS1 complete setup instead of my ZZ4 setup. The LT1 is more serviceable than the LS1 and has great potential for power as well.

if by TPI you mean the wiring harnness, computer and overall injection system with a good intake, then yes swap to EFI


if you mean a bone stock manifold TPI, no.

yes, im just trying to go fuel injection instead of carb cause the carb is not that good on gas. id love to put an ls1 in my car but that would require major modifications. if i can find a good deal on a complete lt1 ill go that way but if not ill go tpi either 305 or 350.
