We have a guy in our 3rd Gen club who dyno'd 442RWTQ and 389RWHP with a ZZ4 cam in his 383. It is a slightly smaller cam than the one you posted.

He is about ready to run at the track and with that kind of power we are talking a 11 second car if he can hook it. If it was me I would be looking at something in the 218 to 224 degree range on the intake side.

It all depends on what you want out of the car. If you want ballz to the wall performance, than that is a small cam for a 383. A friend of mine installed a new cam in his 383 over the winter and ran a best of 11.90 this past saturday. It's in the 240 range with lifts in the low 500's.

Well im looking for somthing i can drive everyday and will pass the sniffer. Do you think the zz4 cam would be a better choice? Or am I asking to much to make a 383 pass emmisions and should i go with a 350?

IMHO the one Comp Cams recomended would be better than the ZZ4 for the 383. It would idle very nicely. I was using it as an example of a build up here locally.

ZZ4 cam in a 383? Yuck! That's even smaller than the XR264HR-12 you listed. Go for the XR276HR-12 or the XR276HR-14 (custom on a 114 LSA for less overlap). The bigger the engine the bigger the cam you can get to pass smog. With a 383 you'll likely need a custom grind anyway, for a small base circle...unless you're going to double check the clearances and grind whatever you need to?

If the XR276HR (08-503-8) is too much for you or you feel uneasy about it go for the XR269HR. BTW, this is exactly what 1989GTATransAm recommended that you look for 218 (XR269HR) 224 (XR276HR) intake duration.

Personally, I'd go for the XR276HR ground on a 114 LSA. I believe that can pass CA smog in a 383 (not a 350).

HI 91RS5SPD, what a small world.I live in duluth also, and am also building a 383 for my 91-Z28. Also contacted comp and got about the same spec, but used a 112 lsa +4 with almost the same lift. I am getting a set of AFRs also and am going to use a stealth ram. I would like to hook up and see your header install that was one of the things i have been thinking about. please e-mail me asap at fluidmotion1@earthlink.net .Also who do you use for machine work and are you going to assemble your own engine.THANKS

To properly judge the cam in your engine more information is needed. What heads are you using? What compression are you running? What is your rear gear? What idle vaccum can you live with? The number one reason for lack of power is improperly matched parts.

Take the recommendation from Comp Cams with a grain of salt. FWIW, I called last week for ****s and giggles, they recommended the same cam to me on my 350, with stock heads, intake, and full exhaust. Most of the time they just go by the "description" in their catalog and make their recommendation.

HI i was also not overly impressed with comps tech guy he was very short and to the point and did not ask me alot of information that i knew he needed, I guess they were just buisey but when your going to make a major decision and spend 800/1000 bucks on a roller set up you would think they would hire some help that would be a littel more attentive. But in the same breath I also met in person one of the guys at SOUTHERN NATIONALS and he was a great guy. I wish i had gotten his number so i could have called him direct. Anyway yes please do e-mail me at my address and give me your number I will be around most of the day sunday. THANKS.........

I am going to be running a 383 with 10:1 compression, Comp 218/224 cam with 112 LSA on .480 lift and HSR system. The guy told me a 224/230 cam so I went one step below for daily driven reasons. I have 3.73's and full exhaust.

My 383 loves the LPE 74219. 219/219 .560/.560 with 1.6 rockers. Great idle as well.

With a 383 it seems to be very important the whole build sheet needs to match well with the whole combonation.. They say with a 383 it's best not to over size the cam.. Let the Ci's make the power with the proper combonation.. So basical the zz4 passes well with Ca emisions as it did for me with the Vortec's.. I yet to use any 1.6 rockers to see what diffrences they will make for the zz4 but probably not enough.. Im leaning toward the direction of a zz9 on 1.5- 1.6's.. The cam should stay streetable and pass emissions.. It's just further researching is that the better cam for the combonation or not..

Don't bother changing a ZZ4 cam to a ZZ9. They're very similar.

A newer design from Comp, Crane, or Crower would be a better replacement for a ZZ4.
