ok guys i got a question im going to be getting a cam for my 305 tpi i dont want anything radical, but i want the most performance i can get without sacrificing too much gas milage and without having to do other mods to make the cam work. so what size would you prefer?

edit: also what do you think it would drop my 14.93 s @ 91.3 to?

Installing a cam with more lift and duration will result in reduced gas mileage. The other consideration is a rough idle. This is the trade off. You just can not get the most performance without affecting gas mileage. It all depends on what you want and what you are willing to sacrifice. Take a look at these camshafts by Comp Cams 08-407-8, 08-408-8, 08-412-8, 08-500-8, 08-501-8 or 08-502-8. They can be found at the following site:

When I asked my mechanic to install a cam in my new 305 the first thing he asked me was if I wanted a rough idle. I did not and I also did not want it to affect gas mileage too much. I was willing to get some more power without a large loss in fuel economy. He phoned Comp Cams and they recommended the 08-412-8 camshaft for what I wanted. I have been pleased with this choice for what I wanted at the time.

You can install a camshaft with out any other modification. However, headers, a more free flowing exhaust, better heads, porting the intake system, better fuel injectors, an adjustable fuel pressure regulator, etc. will all work to permit you to get more out of your camshaft. But you will want to consider these modification when deciding on a camshaft. You will not get the most out a very large camshaft without at least a few of these other modifications.
