Stock TPI intake system removal

just wondering if there are any special tools required to remove the stock intake?

someone mentioned i would need an "extra long" torx kit for it, or that there was a special removal tool for the intake

i have torx sockets and extension bars

are there any special fuel injection pliers that i would need?

i have allt he basic hand tools, just wanted to make sure i wouldn't need anything special when i tackle the head swap/header project.

i will disconnect the fuel pump power and run it till the fuel is out of the rails, drain the coolant, removae the block drain plugs, then go to town labeling and disconnecting things.

thanks

Nothing really special should be necessary. The T-45 or T-50 Torx bit should be about it. There are two bolts for the runners that are installed from the inside, and will require a longer extension to access them from the opposite side, you'll see them.

You'll need:
  • Some smaller Torx drivers to remove the plenum trim extension;
  • A deep 10mm socket for the throttle cable bracket and one bolt used to anchor the wire harness (this can be done with a box wrench, but will be slower than Honda);
  • A high-offset 9/16" wrench for the distributor hold down bolt (or a distributor wrench);
  • A flare nut wrench for the fuel lines;
  • A 14mm socket for the rusted exhaust bolts (they sometimes fit better than the correct 9/16);
  • Penetrating oil (B'LasterPB! or Kroil);
  • Antiseize compound; ;
  • Teflon thread sealant for block drain plugs, water pump, intake, head bolts;
  • Sensor-Safe RTV sealant (Permatex 6C or equivalent);
  • A torque wrench accurate to 65 ft/lb;
There are probably some other things that would make the job faster or easier, but those are the basics.

While the intake is apart and heads are removed, it would be a good opportunity to send the injectors off for cleaning and flow-matching, port-match the plenum and runners, trim the runner gaskets for proper fit, clean the EGR valve, clean carbon from piston tops, check/repair the distributor bearings; check the timing chain slack, replace any old hoses, flush the radiator, inspect the lifters and cam lobes, test or replace the theromstat, and repair any damaged electrical connectors. Piece of cake.

ok, thanks for the tips
i'll order some longer torx bits shortly just to have on hand just incase

wasn't sure if there was a special plier for the fuel line fittings

where can the injectors be sent to?
does it really help out?
car has 88k on it
i use the AFPR and had it set and 48
car ran awesome, especially at 12 degrees initial timing
just did thermostat last year with a full system drain

i do plan cleaning that intake/throttle body out out too

this will be my first EFI setup to take apart and clean.....
i know it's almost 20 year old technology, but it's new for me

left exhaust manifold is off
the other side is soaking in PB
and at least i can get my 1/2 drive wratchet in there

i hope the new E-heads add some nice mow end torque
