ZZ9 cam and L98 heads

Is the ZZ9 too much cam for mildly cleaned up aluminum L98 heads with Accel base/runners? I have bought a ZZ4 cam but haven't installed it yet. I'm thinking about stepping up to a little bigger cam if it will make the car faster.

That's a nice cam. You will have to upgrade your valve springs though.

Stock L98(most chevys) valve springs accept up to .490 lift so you will have to get some valve springs. Also, check out the GM Performance Parts LT4 Hot Cam because it is waaaayyyy cheaper than the T-**** ZZ-9 cam and is almost as "big".

The ZZ3/ZZ4 and ZZ9 cams are so similar it'd be a waste of $$ to go ZZ9. Both are excellent cams for a LTR TPI car. A few years ago one of the Vette mags ran a comparison test between these cams in the same dyno engine. HP/TQ was virtually identical to about 5000 RPM where the ZZ9 started to pull ahead (not by much though). Don't have that article but it'd be a good addition to the archives if someone has a copy.

If you want a little more lift out of the ZZ4 cam, you have the option to install 1.6 ratio roller rocker arms.

Just a suggestion.
