Need input on choosing "funparts" for LTR L98...

Hi all,
I've had my car for a couple of years now and I feel it's time to take it to the next level, so I'm in the process of gathering parts for my currently stock 1988 IROC with a 350 TPI.
I'm going with a large tube TPI setup, but I would really like some input on which parts work well together.
The goal is to have a good streetable weekend driver that really can hold its own against "euro-turbos" and ricers at the redlights...

So far I have bought Hooker 2055 headers, AS&M runners and AFPR.

Still on the list are Edelbrock Hi-flo base, ported plenum, heads and cam.

Heads:
Right now I need to decide if I should go with Vortec or not.
E-tec 170 Vortec or Brodix IK180...
What would be the benefits from going with vortecs in my case?
Also, it dosen't have to be the E-tecs or IK180, I'm open to alternatives.

Cam:
I've read good reviews on the CompCams XFI268 here, but maby to big for my setup? Input please...

I'm running an Accel/Lingenfelter 74211 cam and I'm very happy with it.
I'm also running accel runners and intake since thet were all made to go with each other.
Comp cams are good stuff, but I agree the XFI268 may be a little large.
When I decide to drop some cash for heads, I'll probably be going with AFR190s.

Might consider a set of Comp Pro Magnum full roller rockers. They're very nice rockers.

Re: Need input on choosing "funparts" for LTR L98...

to get the most out of TPI LTR setups, i'd like to see the use of high flowing heads like ported trickflows, AFR's, Canfields, etc. somethign with a 195cc runner wouldnt be bad but wouldnt role out the 180's from AFR. good heads

since most TPI setups seem to peak around 4500-5000rpms or so, the XFI268 would like an intake with abit more rpm range...something like the superram or HSR to upwards of 5500-5800 rpms. but it COULD work well on a TPI for sure if its tuned up! dont be afraid to use it. stock L98 cam will peak around 5100 rpms! while stock TPI dies off by 4400 i'd say. so dont be afraid to go abit larger.

With AFR 180's/195's or similar head with good numbers and XFI268 cam on a LTR setup like AS&M/TPIS big tubes and matching port matched base, that will make probly 330-340whp and run mid 12's all day long. should match some mild turbo'd imports all day long

Re: Need input on choosing "funparts" for LTR L98...

Thanx for the input...
Since my last post I have decided to go with regular style intake, not vortec. Main reason for this is that I decided to do the build in two stages, first do the basics and save the head and cam for next stage.
I'd guess just the parts ordered for Stage 1 will amount to like $3000 including shipping and importtaxes delivered to me in Sweden...

Ordered for Stage 1 so far:
Exhaust: Hooker 2055 w/o AIR, Flowmaster American Thunder 3", gutted cat, Percy's aluminum headergaskets, Stage 8 locking bolts, shorter serp.belt 96.75 inch for use when removing AIR-pump.
Intake: Edelbrock Hi-Flo base, a used plenum that I'm going to port, AS&M-runners, K&N TPI filters, SLP Airfoil, MrGasket 146 gaskets.
Misc: MSD 8226 Blaster Coil, ACDelco rapidfire plugs ACF-2, USB ALDL-scan cable, Accel 300+ spark plug wires

Stage 2 stilll in planning:
Heads (non vortec), Cam XFI268, XE269 or..?, converter?, gears?

Will the parts in stage 1 provide me with a good foundation for stage 2 or is there something I need to change?

What can I expect in hp/torque with "stage 1"?

those are great mods to start with.

the main reason for the vortec head it the combustion chamber. it's WAY better at quenching the air/fuel too make much better power. BUT any good head (like the above) already have the vortec style chamber. so if your going to get a good aftermarket head, forget about the vortec's. afr, tricflow, there's quite a few of them now to chose from.

Re: Need input on choosing "funparts" for LTR L98...

Stage I looks pretty good so far. with proper tune, i could expect you to see near 240-245whp and probly over 330wtq. maybe closer to 350wtq.

make sure you port match the base runner tube holes to the AS&M style runner. I had a accel superram base and the holes were tiny and left plenty of room for porting. i'd possibly try to open up the runner holes and stock plenum. portmatching the runners to the plenum and base will give you very good flow path. Nice and smooth with no interferences. That will give you some power.

I wouldnt necessarily port match the base to the heads or vice versa yet. since you will plan on doing heads later on anyway, port match the base then.

Stage two should consist of good heads, nice cam and gear/converter to match. most TPI setups will like 2800 stall and 3.42 gears If you have 9 bolt rear end, you'll want 3.45 gears which are very rare and hard to find. they make 3.70's but those are abit deep for TPI. so you may have to use 3.27's
