advanced timing.. now it won't idle. why?

I had the timing set at 0 degrees (the car had been off the road since october, and the distributor had been out of the car) I ran it for about a week like this. Today I decided to advance it. I went through the normal procuedure, unplugged the EST spark connector, jumpered the ALDL, and advanced it to around 8 degrees. I go to start the car, and the idle quality is poor, and when I put it in gear it stalls out. What's the problem here? I had always had that advancing timing tends to smooth out an idle, not roughen it.

Since I didnt say it before, glad to hear you got the car running.

As for the problem, yea thats usually what happens. Is the distibutor in upside-down?

Make sure the plug wires are all hooked up in the right spots.

Upside down ?!?

Make you knocked the IAC connector loose when you were fooling around with the distributor. Are you sure you plugged the EST connector back in ? If none of this helps go through the IAC reset procedure listed in tech articles on this site.
