PROM Question

Is there a difference in the PROM chips in the '86-'89 ECM's (1227165)? I am asking because I got one cheap in a junkyard, but I don't know if it needs a different PROM or not.I see that the actual application for that ECM was quite varied.
Thanks!!

There are some differences, such as 89 having VATS.

ProBuilt 700R4, PI Vigilante 2800 stall lockup

My main question though is:
Will I need a different PROM, if it is pre-89 and say....out of something with 6 cylinders instead of eight? If so can the PROMS be differentiated?

You need to differentiate between the prom and the carrier with the "limp home" chip-Yes you need a carrier with at least a close match for the limp home mode to work half decent; definitly v-8 for a v-8. The prom itself is removable and can be reprogrammed to 'bout anything you want. The prom itself should have a code on it eg. auyp etc. that you can look up and see what it came out of. Check the diy-prom area and run a search; I sure you'll find all your answers.
