O2 sensor and ECM ?

I have been chasing a rough running/stalling/low idle/lack of power problem for many moons now. I decided to disconnect the O2 sensor and run the car for awhile, and even after the car got hot as hell (and should have been checking O2 output), the ECM never set the service engine soon light. The light works fine, even after several starts and stops and extended idle periods the lack of an O2 sensor never set a code. My question is, shouldn't this flash the SES light? If so, then am I due a new ECM? Thanks guys.

Also, if it matters, I never drove it, just ran it at idle and revved the engine slowly up to 3000 RPM and back down, holding it at various speeds in between for extended periods of time. I'm sure with the car being hot enough for the engine fans to come on the O2 sensor should be referenced by the ECM. What gives? Thanks guys.
