Is it possible I have LT-1 heads?

My builder when he reworked my 406 put a set of heads on my motor.........said they were LT-1 heads. No, I haven't pulled the valve cover to check the casting number (tho I should just to check) but wondering if it is possible. Does the reverse cooling thing matter on the heads?

Nope, not possible. There are lots of differences in the LT1 heads, the reverse cooling being the biggest. It might be possible to modifiy the hell out of the head and get it to work but I've never heard of anyone doign it, it would be way more work then it would be worth.

That is what I thought..........hmm, now I'm going to have to pull the valve cover off and see what it really is. No biggie, he only charged me $200 for them all freshened up..........first said they were Vortecs, which I promptly questioned him on, and he then said LT-1.

He may be talking about the heads out of the 2nd gen (early 70s) LT1 camaro. It was a 350, so the heads would work with your motor.

DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT tell people it's not possible especially since you never heard of it being done. It IS possible to put LT1 heads OR intake on a standard SBC. Several people have done these things so think before you post. Thank you.

The article on putting Gen 2 (LT1, LT4, L99) heads on a Gen 1 engine is on my website. Its not worth the effort unless you do it yourself IMO.

check it out: http://members.tripod.com/GRK_Taz/tech/1.html

Wow, I never read that before. Very good reading. I wonder if CHP would do my conversion write up and make me famous? It would be cool to have them publish it.

I stand corrected, jumped the gun on that one. Thats an interesting article on the head swap. I agree its probably only worth the effort if you've got the resources and know how to do all the work yourself.

Also, I'm planning on doing the LT1 intake conversion this winter. It sounds like a great idea, and I'd send an e-mail or letter to CHP for sure and see if they're interested. Maybe car craft too, they seem to be more into fuel injection then CHP.

I believe Lingenfelter tried it out, and if I remember correctly he said that the power increase wasn't worth the cost of the conversion. I'll have to double check that though.
