MAF burn off question - i've read the archives..
i have an 89 iroc 305tpi
had code 33/34 cuz i effed up the maf by descreening it. i replace it with a working one from an 87 iroc 350. the car now intermittantly has a code 36. never got this code before changing to the 87 maf. i am about to change the burn off relay but had this question 1st:
since i've changed to the 87 maf my car sometimes blows some white smoke out the exhaust when first started and the rpms go to about 2000 and then settle down. this is usually when the light comes on for the 36. the car runs great with exception of a slight misfire at idle (also intermittant) and strong exhaust smell - this condition is lessened when the 36 does not set the light. can someone explain what function of the burn off is and if it would cause this? like i said this immediately started happening with the swapped maf. could the maf be the code 36?

You should only get burn-off when you shut the car off, can you unplug the BO relay to see if it's the problem?
BTW, whats the definition of a code-36?

well i know the burn off is only supposed to activate once the car is shut off, but wasn't sure if that relay could cause my problems while running...
also, today the maf took a crap. car started idling sporratically so i unplugged the maf. time for a new one then we'll see if the code 36 comes back.
36 btw is - mass air flow burnoff circuit, transmission shift problem, ignition problem.
from all the threads, the 36 seems to always lead to the burnoff circuit...
